DRIVING IN SYDNEY! Please help me plan my trip!

So, the key thing is, I have to be in Sydney over the next few days for interviews. I live in Canberra. I was wondering, what is the best efficient way to go about doing this.

I have some night events (from 6-8 generally) and the coaches always finish at around 8pm. I.e. leave sydney.

I was thinking, if I drive, I want to stop at a station, and then train the rest of the way to central. Is this a good idea? and what is the most five efficient place to park my car and catch a train?

  • I'm kinda confused. So you are thinking of driving to Sydney? Are all your interviews in they city over those few days?

Where are you going to stay while in Sydney? I think that is the determining factor for where you can/should park your car if you plan to catch the train to Central.

  • Where are you staying? the cheapest way would be to take a bus from jollimont in canberra, and take it to central.

  • So, e.g. next week, I have three events from 6-8pm at night in sidney on Monday, tuesday and wednesday. I plan to drive down each day and drive back up. But I realise this may not be the best idea. I can't take the bus because the latest bus leaves at 8pm at night and I won't make it back on time.

Is there a cheap way to stay somewhere in the city for two nights? With parking?

    • Firstly, you're right about it being not such a good idea to drive back and forth between Syd and Canberra each day lol. You'd go crazy and it'd be totally cost ineffective.

Secondly, if you're driving up here, I wouldn't stay in the actual CBD. Find accommodation just outside the city - like the inner western suburbs. Plenty of public transport and it's only a quick <10min train or bus ride into the city. Also much better chance of getting free street parking. There are loads of hostels in the CBD but I doubt any would include parking… especially free parking.

I haven't stayed at this place but nearly did once: http://www.cambridgelodge.com.au/our-lodge/

Stanmore is pretty close to the city - read that page for all the deetz. Prices are pretty decent too (even better if you don't mind sharing a dorm room). :)

    • where abouts are these events? IMO there is no point driving to a residential area to park your car, then taking a train/bus to the city if you can just take a bus from jollimont to central station for half the petrol cost of driving.

      • But if they take the coach, they'd either have to miss the Wednesday night event or pay for another night accommodation to get the morning coach, no? (if the last coach leaves Syd at 8pm as the OP says).

Petrol isn't that expensive for a Canberra-Sydney trip. I routinely drove back and forth when I worked in Canberra. Did it in just a tad under 1/2 a tank (60L capacity) in my trusty old 2001 Camry lol. That was a good car. Sigh. But yeah, one way would be 1/4 of a tank. Not too pricey really.

  • Hey, thanks for the replies, the closest place for the events would be the Martin Place train station. In terms of where to stay, any place outside the city works well for me, as long as its near a train station and has parking.

Can people recommend a good place? Happy to pay up to 50-70 dollars for a night. Is there any cheap accommodation deals on Ozbargain…?

I plan to drive there on monday, and stay monday night and tuesday night, and checkout wednesday and drive back wednesday night.

    • Re-read my second post… I gave you a suggestion that meets your criteria lol

  • Also the OP could check out AirBnB to find a room for the night wherever he/she wants to stay… I always find there are decently priced accommodation choices on there..
