Gigabyte Laptops

Does anyone own one? I don't see many reviews for most of the models and they don't seem to come with consumer friendly names (only have a model number essentially).

I'm currently tossing up between Q25NV2-840-4701S from GIGABYTE buying at MSY for $999.
Or, the ASUS X550LN-CN074H buying at OnLine computer at $995.

I don't expect either to have much performance when it comes to battery life. But I know some laptops don't even turn off the GPU when it's not needed so anyone with first hand experience?

Also I was looking at buying a cheaper / older gen model for my little brother for school work. Do you know if either of these places will budge on price if I buy more than one unit?

Quick specs:
Both run 840M
The gigabyte comes with a 4710MQ as opposed to 4500u i7
both have 8 gigs of ram clocked at 1600 but the gigabyte one can be oc'd to 1866 (advertised by msy so i assume its a factory approved oc??).
The ASUS has a 4 Cell battery and the Gigabyte a 6 cell.

Pretty much everything's leaning towards the gigabyte for me at the moment but my biggest issue is I'm not sure how the gigabyte will look and feel (and the reliability) where as the asus brand for me is much more tried and tested.

Thanks guys!

  • The gigabyte comes with a 4710MQ as opposed to 4500u i7

That would mean a world of difference when it comes to CPU-demanding applications. Also how would you live with 15.6" at 1366x768? What do you intend to use the laptop for?

    • In all honesty I would LIKE a FHD but i doubt i'll notice much of a difference day to day. And the specs seem good enough for it to ultimately become a desktop replacement. So it may be plugged in all day to my monitor and what not anyway.

Pretty much just looking for someone to tell me they have a gigabyte branded laptop and that its been solid for them lol.

  • +1

    Dell Factory Outlet

Some good bang for buck deals on there.

  • Both Gigabyte and Asus have the same problem: excellent quality products, very poor after-sales support. For both you'll be very happy with it for a while, then when the battery loses its charge or the screen starts to die when the warranty is out, you will have to let it go.

Dells and HPs aren't as good quality, but at least if they do go wrong you'll have no trouble at all finding replacement parts. And Dell's after-sales support is excellent.

If you don't believe me, just try sourcing a battery for a laptop that's 18 months old.

  • Dells and HPs aren't as good quality

I agree about HP, but the latitude is top notch. I look after 30 plus of these at work and they are very well made and haven't missed a beat.

  • I own a Gigabyte U24F-4701P, which I bought as a replacement when my old Asus Vivobook s400ca-ca012h died out on me after only a year. I've only had my Gigabyte since May though.

The Gigabyte's sturdy, well made and light. The keyboard is pretty comfortable and I haven't noticed any flex myself. The trackpad is good, but I'm not personally a fan of the rougher texture of it. The screen pretty sturdy as well as the hinges, so when you open and close it it doesn't feel like you'll damage it. This is unlike my Asus which my boyfriend has complained about in build quality before since he's picky about that sort of thing. He agrees though that the Gigabyte is built well.

Mine has a dual vent design which I've heard good things about, and I haven't experienced mine overheating, only getting warm. Unlike my old Asus which heated up quite a lot and often too. Underneath the Gigabyte there are some smaller panels which are probably easy access to your RAM or something, haven't checked myself though. The overall design nice too. Thought it wouldn't since it's pictures didn't look that great.

Battery life is okay for me. I think I get somewhere around 4-5hours on my use which is usually just surfing, media or sometimes coding. But I don't keep a close watch since I like to keep the charger with me. My Asus one was disappointing, only about 3-4hours.

I have a couple of problems, but that might just be the machine I got. The wifi can be a bit weird sometimes. It'll just say the connection is limited but that's fixed just by turning my wifi off and on again or restarting the laptop. Only happens if I close my screen too much or hibernate it though. Mine also seems to have a single dead pixel, but that was there since I got it and truthfully you never even notice it except in certain conditions. Also if you like to keep your keyboard clean with a cover I can't find one personally. Oh and mine came with a snug fit case and screen cleaning cloth.

Yes, long post but like you I barely found any reviews on Gigabyte laptops so maybe this'll help someone. Since I wasn't sure what to expect out of it, I just got it and I really love it. Good laptop, no hiccups and yeah. Just hope it'll last me a long time.
