Can't get a working remote after settlement? Help!

Hi Guys,

I ran into an annoying situation after the settlement of my apartment.

The property agent didn't give me the remote control for entrance of the car park on the settlement day. As we didn't know how many keys we should have, we took all the keys he gave us.

We rang up the agent about the missing remote and he did give me one the other day, say it may need to be programmed before working properly. We gave it a try but none of the buttons can lift up the entrance door. We asked the building manager and he said to program this little thing will cost me around 200 bulks (What?!).

We had no other way but to ring up the agent again because he was the one be responsible to give me a remote control in working order. He then gave a few calls to the owner and the rental agent of the previous lease and said nothing he can do. Basically the owner said he had given the rental agent all the keys for the previous lease and the rental agent insisted that is control - even though it is not working. Surely none of the parties wants to pay the cost, which left me on no man's land.

Just wondering if any ozbargainers has been in this situation before. Do I have to suck up the cost? I understand I have to check everything before settlement but the agent would not give out the keys until settlement, how could possible I check if all the keys work?

Sorry for the long post, it is an annoying thing ruins the joy of a new home. I do appreciate the input from you.

I would buy a new remote yourself, and then forward the invoice on to the rental agent for reimbursement.

Have you bought the apartment or are you renting? It sounds like you're buying.

This should all have been checked during the final inspection prior to settlement.

    • Yes I bought the apartment :-)
We only checked the apartment on the settlement day. We forgot to check the remote control. The agent didn't have the remote at the time (he got the faulty remote from the rental agent after settlement) and only showed me the spot of car park. I should had had it checked..sigh

As mentioned, this gets checked at final inspection PRIOR to settlement. Time to move on and learn for next time. Must do final inspection and check EVERYTHING.

one suggestion… if you are sharing the door with other apartments find a friendly neighbour, often in shopping centres there are "key" kiosks that will clone remotes, so you could clone a working remote.

alternatively if the door is yours alone (not shared), then what I did was lookup my garage opener model online, find a compatible remote (ebay), found the manual, reset all existing remotes (i.e. wipe all existing), and then program the new one… it's typically fairly easy, i.e. press a button on the door opener, press button on remote, press button again on opener and you're done… however this is probably best if you're a little technically minded.

Naw, I was expecting a far more dramatic story based on the title - one involving a vengeful or mischievous ex-partner post-divorce-settlement, and either a garage door remote or even worse, the embittered ex handing over all your TV/multimedia-devices back with remote controls that suspiciously no longer work..

  • REA are known for doing this — they say they don't have it but they are actually keeping it so that they can use if for open inspections later on… Ask your building manager to cancel that particular remote so they can't do this.

  • Hi Guys, more than 4 weeks ago, Jeff Vassallo from Australiaopeners (The owner) installed a new garage door opener for my garage. It cost me $425.00 and he told me that it has 1 year replacement warranty. After one week the opener stopped working and I have been trying to contact Jeff on his mobile number he provided to me. His mobile number is 0469 409 311. I left many messages, approximately more than 25 calls and he never responded and not answering the phone. I do not have any other details of him. He did not provide the tax receipt. There is no brand name on the opener as well. He has a website and I sent messages through his website as well and he did not response.

It has been more than 4 weeks now and I am frustrated with Jeff and his business ethics. He is very unprofessional.

If anyone out there did business with Jeff and experienced any problem? If you know how to contact him or what should I do please let me know.
