Automatic watches - deciding whether to sell or service

This probably isn't a typical ozbargain topic, but I own an automatic watch (worth $5k) and reading forums/visiting stores, the general consensus is automatic watches require servicing every 5 years (looking at about $500).

Just wanted to ask my fellow ozbargainers if they can recommend a decent watch servicer in Sydney or if they can share their experience in selling their watch (how much can they sell for)

Hard to advise without knowing the model.

I have a 1973 Seiko and a 1975 Omega, both automatic, neither has ever been repaired or serviced. I rarely wear watches these days, so they might sit for months without being used. Both of them seem to keep time ok when I do use them, but I don't wear them for more than a day or two at a time so I don't have any long-term experience.

If your watch is working ok then I probably wouldn't worry about the regular service. You may want to speak with an authorised repairer though to get a professional opinion as your $5k watch is likely to be more complicated than my two, which just show time and date.

  • I also only have cheap automatics, but why would you service them if they continue to keep good time?

If a timepiece is keeping good time it still may need a service. Parts can slowly wear out as the oils get old and don't lubricate as well as they should. The wear may only show after a long while.

Probably better to service them every 10 years or something as it costs too much to do it every 2-5 years.

  • Unfortunately, yes it is prudent practice to service. And just as unfortunately, service from a quality horologist does not come cheap.

In Sydney, I can recommend http://clockmaker.com.au/
Nick will take care of your watch. I don't know if his rates are competitive with other horologists, but his name comes up as the go-to-guy often enough.

    Good luck.
