I've recently had a bad experience with Etihad. Firstly, I purchased 2 return fares to the UK on my MasterCard. After you've purchased they then inform you via email that you have to bring your credit card with you to the check in desk. However, between purchasing and flying, my credit card had expired and I'd been issued with a new one. I had to get letters from the bank explaining all of this. It was a major head ache and very worrying because they email you informing "no credit card, no fly". Worse still, before I purchased I read the mile long terms and conditions and found a clause where I would have to pay US$300 to cancel the booking. What I didn't realise is that one of the other terms and conditions on another leg I booked said no cancellation allowed. My circumstances had changed and I tried to cancel my flight and get a refund. I was then informed that if there is a "no cancellation" on any leg it applies to all legs. I wrote to their Head office, explaining all of the above and the reason I wanted to cancel my flight. They replied "tough luck". So I'm down $1900 bucks.

    • So a couple of questions there

      1) if you bring the expired card as well as the new one would that have been OK ?

I had a look at their T&C and it doesn't say that the card has to be un-expired (is that even a word) You can also bring a photocopy.

      2) was it on a credit card that provided free travel insurance ? if so can you claim it ?

      • I don't know the answer to 1) … when I received my new credit card I cut up the old one as per the instructions. I bought the tickets like 7 months in advance, so wasn't really thinking about the Etihad requirements when I cut up the old credit card.

        2) … that's a good question, I'm pretty sure I do have travel insurance on that card and never considered that angle. Thanks for mentioning it. I'll follow it up.

  • do they charge 10% credit card surcharge (or equivalent in $$$)for Amex like all good airlines?
