Expired gift voucher

I bought my partner a $200 Event Cinema Gold Class Gift Voucher a couple of years back. We are moving house now, and I found the unused voucher. Unfortunately, it has expired over 12 months ago. Is there any way to get the Cinema to honour the voucher or obtain a refund, even a partial refund.

I appreciate that the voucher clearly states an expiry date and I did enter into the sale knowing this. Obviously we never intended to misplace/forget the voucher, but it does seem unethical (if that's the correct term?) to take money and put a time-scale on its effective use.

Is there anything that can be done?

Suggestions appreciated.

Tough luck, I don't think there is any way around this.

It's not unethical to profit from it, it's in fact called "unredeemed gift card" and it's the most income generating portion of any gift card sale.

Next time make sure your partner uses everything you buy immediately, or keep nagging until he/she does!

  • I very much doubt that they will honour it.

While frustrating for the buyer, the reason why they put expiry dates on it is because these become liabilities.
To over exagerate but you get the point, imagine receiving the money for $20,000 of gift cards this year, business looks good. But then 10-15 years later having to provide the goods without receiving a cent.

Effectively you have to keep $20,000 of receivables aside until it can be matched against the expense of providing the goods which in the meantime may have become more expensive to provide.

Try writing a very polite letter to the General Manager of the organisation which sold you the voucher. Give them the full detail of why the voucher wasn't used and ask if - as a goodwill gesture - they will issue you with a replacement voucher? Not all organisations are bastards and sometimes if you are both polite and honest about what happened, you may be pleasantly surprised. Accusing them of being unethical will be unhelpful, so don't do it.
Let us know if you have any success.
    Good luck!

    • Agreed, my Brother found a $100 Woolies gift card that had expired in 2010, and they gave him 2 months to use it last month.

He did mention he was a pensioner :) with his email Good luck.

      Be nice like Shadow54 advices.

BTW the law says they can keep the money, but goodwill can be used.

      • Do this. In social media. There is always people backing you up there. with enough pressure, they will cave in even if you are in the wrong :)

  • I have used expired giftcards before, Not Event cinema tho,

    Give it a shot!

  • Isn't that what the whole gift card industry relies on for profits? lol

All those unused, expired gift cards… $$$

    I'd give Shadow54's suggestion a try. Can't hurt to ask :)

In another note, should have just give your partner cold hard cash. Gift card is just useless. You're basically turning your cash into cash-like.

And just like that you killed any sympathy I might of had for you….

    • why would anyone buy gift cards for someone who is living with them, more if that someone is your significant other?

Could have deposit those $200 in the bank, earn the interest. Take whatever you need when you want to buy the gold class tickets. That way, there is no expiry and you earn a bit of interests.
