Audi Q5 2.0TDI (Diesel) Vs Lexus Rx270

I am looking to buy a luxury SUV, as the family's 2nd car (2 young kids). Will be used just to take kids to swimming classes and occasional trips to Canberra/Wollongong/Hunter Vally etc.

I am considering between Audi Q5 2.0TDI (Diesel) Vs Lexus Rx270, (preferably a Demo model)

I test drove both the cars and enjoyed both of them equally, I am not a car enthusiast and don't appreciate much the subtle differences of driving one vs the other. Both cars will meet my needs. I would generally keep the car for around 8-10 years.

My question is, over the long run, which car would be more value for money and economical to run?

The points that I have on my mind are:

  1. Base Cost: Q5 is a bit more expensive then RX270
  2. Service Cost: Audi are generally more expensive then Lexus
  3. Milage: Q5 is 6.1L/ 100 KM of Diesel Vs Rx270 at 9.4L/100 Km of petrol
  4. Registration/Insurance Costs: I don't know if there are much difference in Insurance / CTP costs of these cars?
  5. Both car can be financed at around the same costs,

Any help on these lines of any other point that I haven't considered would be really helpful. My time frame to get the car is 6-8 weeks,

PS: I posted the same on whrilpool and got some good pointers, leaning more towards Lexus, also suggested to look at Volvo CX60, which I will look at.

So any experience with Volvo's please share and enlighten.

regards

    Quite interesting thread, especially posts about fuel economy, some claiming not to talk about fuel economy when spending a lot of money for the car itself. This is crazy to say the least, I bought a Lexus hybrid to replace my hyundai getz and I save 3 liters daily for the same commute. When you pay big bucks for a car you keep your senses and ongoing costs are still a factor.

    • which one did u get? 300h? if so, what price plz?

      • No, 200H. 300H was just announced when I bought mine.

        • i am looking for a new 300h, wondering if i can get it below 61k

    reliability and service cost..lexus… not keen on lexus interior…not sure if they have removed stupid fake woodgrain that most lexus suv use to have
    looks, interior quality, handling, performance, fuel consumption, handling audi…..
    i know what i would take…

    • +1 for double handling

  • Get a mazda cx5 gt 2.5L instead

    Save yourself 10k too

    Best mid end SUV vs low end luxury brand SUV

    Go test drive one and you won't be disappointed!

    • the diesel cx5 is fantastic choice… engine is very torquie

  • Audi > Toyota with makeup.

    • True, Audi is not VW crap.

    • Go through the VW platform list and see what platforms are shared and what aren't: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Volkswagen_Group_platfo…

      A1 = Polo
      A3 = Golf
      A4 = Passat
      Tourag = Q7

      The Q5 is listed as an MLB platform which is just a longitudinal based DSG configuration, not offered on the Tiguan.

      Audi uses VW based technology and retains the cost saving FWD configuration unless you pay extra for the Quattro AWD system (which is the only system you should have on an Audi - except on the A1, A3 it's not available due to space limitations, so essentially it's a Polo/Golf with a different badge and the same DSG transmission).

  • Infinity QX70- don't be a sheep and get a Beemer\Merc\Audi\Lexus

    Sorry this is a litte off topic, but anyone else think this is a slight oxymoron.

    Ozbargain thread discussing luxury cars?

    • I think most of us in this thread save all our pennies to spend it on useless stuff like luxury cars :d

      • Lol, fair point. I do spend money on some useless stuff, but not on cars. So many good cars for reasonable prices, why pay loads more for the label?

        Paying for label is against my religion :-)

        • Some luxury cars are justified in their price, some are not. Like the mentioned Lexus RX270 for example. You could argue a case for the hybrid RX450, based on fuel economy, but not the 270.

          A Mercedes E class costs a lot of money, but it is a very well engineered, extremely safe (based off real world fatalities per 1000 accident) data, and is a bench mark for a mid sized car. It is worth the money (well not retail price, but what you can buy them for here).

          A Ferrari 458 Speciale only cost $20k more than a regular 458. It is essentially hand crafted, it is stupendously fast, extremely well engineered, and certainly worth a lot of money (maybe not what Ferrari charge in Australia, but still it is worth a lot of money). Watch megafactories Ferrari to understand the attention to detail that goes into a Ferrari.

          A Range Rover Vogue is a stupidly expensive car, but as an all rounder, it is unsurpassed, it can go anywhere in unrivalled luxury, and if you spec the petrol V8, it can do it quickly. It is extremely high tech and very well made. It is worth a premium (not the premium charged here, but a premium none the less).

          I drove a Mclaren 12C, it was a very fast car, and it was very nice to drive, It accelerated like a bat out of hell, especially at the top of the rev range, braked harder than any car I have ever driven, cornered at speeds that pushed my passengers face into the window and felt like it was riding on a magic carpet while it did all this. It was an amazing car, and if I had $500k kicking around, I'd consider one, the engineering was magnificent.

          These cars aren't just paying for a label, they are not just good cars, they are the best in class and worth a premium. In reality, a $40k commodore is around one third of the price of a Merc E250. It is about as a fast, probably a bit faster, about the same size, but when you drive the two, it is apples and oranges. The Benz does everything better. And not just a little bit better, a lot better. It uses half the fuel, it corners twice as well, it is much more comfy, it is much safer (waiting for a person someone to start with the whole 5 stars rubbish), it will eat up the miles or potter around town. Is it three times better? No. Is it worth the premium? To a lot of people, yes.
