Buying locked phones cheaper from America then unlocking them

Hi guys, I'm wondering if anyone knows more of this than me.
I recently saw in a thread or deal (I can't find it) where people were talking about unlocking a Nokia Lumia 520 bought from America and someone replied with a link to this http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2265755 where it's revealed it is indeed possible to unlock the phone. (http://windowsphonehub.in/tutorials/dev-unlock-chinese-hack-…)

I'm wondering, can this be done with most phones?
Would it be a good idea to buy a locked phone from America using a fowarding service with the intention of unlocking it?

I realise there's moral implications here, but I can't afford a good smart phone on regular prices.

The cheap Kogan iphones recently were shipped with a Verizon SIM, so I guess they are already doing this on a grand scale!

  • make sure the phone you are buying supports the frequencies you need for your telco

aren't the chinese phones cheap enough?

How much are the savings anyway?

you need to factor in the cost of forwarding service (which in itself can be expensive) + cost of unlocking the phone + an adaptor + whether the phone has global warranty.

I can't resist the comment, so,

I cant afford a luxury car but I want one too, so if I ignore the morality of something I can have it too.

Morality judgements aside, Juventino's post makes most sense
