Setting up hotmail on OS X

I got the macbook air from the kogan deal and am still having troubles with the mail app

I initially couldn't get it working properly with my hotmail account, then finally got it working. (kind of)

Cleaned up a lot of my inbox deleting unneeded emails. Looking at emails about an hour ago, all fine, go back into the app 20 minutes later and the entire inbox is empty. Hit rebuild and all my emails are back (including the ones I deleted, complete waste of time cleaning it up)

Does the mail app just not work well with hotmail? Or am I doing something completely wrong.. Had a surface pro before hand and love everything about the macbook more except the mail in windows 8 is so much better

    What the? Thats an odd issue. So, you loaded in the emails once, closed the program and the next time it reloaded all the emails from the server to your computer again? You didn't imput the exchange details incorrectly? Though that shouldn't cause this to happen. I asked because you seem confused.

    Not the one I was using but doesn't seem to bad. First thing I would make sure the details match that. There was a really good page that told you all the details you needed, they just needed to be plugged in right but I am having trouble finding it for you.

    This is the one I used. Use the pop3 setting listed at the bottom, never had an issues. Just fixed it up on my mail as well.

      I didn't even close the program I always leave it open in a fullscreen app then just swipe to check my emails. Swiped and everything was gone.

    Did you enter settings as imap or pop for the incoming mailbox?

      I have a feeling it was pop. If I understand correctly pop is only local sync so changes won't affect my actual email account only my laptop.. Whereas Imap changes affect the email account as well, but does imap even work for hotmail?

      Actually the default is imap and I didn't change it so it would have been imap. So I'm confused why my changes didn't affect my actual email account, I'd been using the mail app for a few weeks now. Do I need to manually click the "synchronize hotmail" button in order for the changes to save in my email?

        Yep, imap now works for hotmail. I set it up the other day on my new macbook pro retina. I don't have to do anything special to "sync" the mail - what I do locally is reflected on the server/webmail interface. It does sound from what you are describing that it's still using POP.

          I just setup my account again this morning and now everything seems to be working correctly, didn't do anything different to just putting in my email and password like last time, unsure why it wasn't working before.

    Why don't you ring up Apple or go to the Apple store?

      Got it sorted now, but my nearest apple store is 2 1/2 hour drive and software support generally just annoys me copy pasting/repeating something that has little relevance to my question
