Pre-ordering Destiny

Hello folks. I'm a 3+ decade gamer but this is the first time I'm actually contemplating a pre-order. Mostly because my son is now following in my footsteps and enjoyed the beta so much, he's begging to get the game on day one. Prior to this, I always just bought my games when they were old and on sale. (I also have a incredible pile of shame on steam)

Anyway, back to the original question, what do you folks reckon is the best value way of pre-ordering this game. I only know of US PSN that has it at $60 for the base game and $90 for the digital guardian edition. EB wants to sell it to me for $100 for the standard and $130 for the Limited. Are there any cheaper ways to get this on day one? What's the biggest advantage of the digital guardian edition? I'll admit that the collectibles in the limited edition from EB are cool but I'm afraid it will just add to the clutter in my house (I was never this practical 20 years ago)

As I've never bought a season pass before, I'm a little confused by it. Most of the games I've bought were already GOTY edition that already had everything included in it.

Also I'm totally non-plussed about not having a physical disc but if there are advantages to having one and if they're available for less moolah, I'm all ears.

Kindly help illuminate my possible choices.

Probably the best option for preorder (Locally) would be Dick Smith's deal posted below in the forum, where it is $69.98 for the game on PS4/XBone - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/154669.

As someone else who generally never preorders games, I have generally found that the cheapest place to find games would be on day one with some shopping around… sometimes the ozbargain gods are in your favour, but within the first week, we have had some really good deals on new release games, if you are willing to be at the selected store close to opening time! I have purchased new release titles at prices which are generally half RRP (depending on the game) at brick and mortar stores, including Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag (less than $50 on release date), Mario Kart 8 (~$53 on release), Watch Dogs ($58 within the release week) and many more bargains (Thanks to Ozbargain!).

From my view on games, the price is generally the cheapest within the first week of release, raises up for a month or two, then starts to drop in price, until it finally ends up in the bargain bin.

The limited edition comes with the first 2 DLC (valued at 40 AUD), a special space ship ingame, emblem and ghost skin. EB also has a preorder bonus of a fast speeder bike (unlockable ingame, just costs a fair bit) and u also get some vanguard weaponry with all the first editions of the game I think.

I assume the PSN US digital guardian comes with most of this (maybe not the speeder bike).

Therefore if you are likely to be into it (and I know I will be playing the shit out of it), it's probably better value to buy the Digital guardian edition than the one from Dick smith, just considering the DLC price alone.

I will be buying the LTD ed from EB because I want the other ingame stuff + I dont really have a choice on xbox one.

  • Thanks for the replies. Since I dont' even remember buying games at more than $50, I didn't realize that new release games had a discounting window. I'm mostly a bargain bin kind of gamer since I know I hardly have any real time to really play a game.

I'm intrigued by the 2 DLC being included in the digital guardian edition but am also a bit leery. Most of the GOTY games I have, I never even managed to touch the DLC content. Also some of them seemed to be nothing more than extra multiplayer maps.

For anyone who has more experience with DLC, are these things worth it from a single player perspective who just really likes the game?

  • Destiny's dlc are likely to include campaign missions as well as PvP maps. Note that destiny is not able to be played offline, you can solo missions but you'd be missing out on the fun.

  • Just a note that the Raid mode in Destiny will have no matchmaking, or PUGs as you'd call them in MMOs. So make sure you can muster 5 people for that mode.

  • Thanks again. At this point, the US PSN downloadable guardian edition seems to be offering the best value.

Are there any downsides to it being purely just a download vs having a physical copy?

    • beside the fact you can't download the game if you don't have internet connection…it should be fine!

      • U cant play the game without an internet connection though either , destiny is always online.
