EA "subscription" XBOX ONE

So EA just recently announced a subscription for xbox one.
Before jumping on the EA hate train to hate town (And rightfully so), this actually seems like a decent deal. You can pay 5 dollars a month, or 40 dollars a year for access to a few games, discounts on EA games and DLC (and theres lots of DLC with these games).

Read more about it here http://www.kotaku.com.au/2014/07/ea-announces-subscription-p…

Obviously its prob not the best idea to grab it straight up, but watch it carefully and see if its worthwhile.

  • Stuff it, I jumped straight in….it's a no brainer for me. Grabbed my sub off the US store for $30 though.

Instant access (once downloaded) to the full retail versions of BF4, FIFA, Madden and Peggle for $30/yr and that's just the start of it. The main thing's for me will be the 10% discount on NHL and FIFA.

  • "http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136509-EA-Access-is-the-Publishers-New-Subscription-Service-for-Xbox-One seems like a pretty solid deal assuming games in the vault remain in the vault for at least a year and that you have unlimited access to any game in the vault so long as your subscription remains active."

My view just quickly typed this morning.

"Big assumptions there. I don't know tbh, I'm split between this idea of subscribing for access/renting games. Reinforces the ideas of providing games and media as a service instead of a product. Removes any remaining sense of ownership over it all. But at the same time I can see the merits behind it. Games are increasingly expensive to develop - marketing costs are retarded because of how it's all done. The entire industry is unsustainable… But then that feeds the idea that they're trying to change and monetize this whole mess in order to sustain the current cycles"

My mates counter point which holds value as well.

    • +1

The idea of subscribing doesnt bother me, since I generally do not replay games, just finsih the single player and sell them. If a game has really good multiplayer I generally do keep it, but this is usually like 1/50.

      • Then its not a bad solution for someone in your position provided you really like EA.

  • The concept is good - PSN started the costed 'free' game concept - EA is just running with the same idea. Personally renting games is fine.. for $40 a year its good value.
Anyone with a modded console or uses steam know the advantages of hard drive stored games.

  • Whilst this is definitely the way toward the future, with the variety and amount of games that are around now, it'd be cool if it was like a bundle of Foxtel channels, and you just pay for what genre and developer you like the most.

However, I think this 'Game is free for a limited amount of time' concept will prompt EA to shove more DLC in their games (if it were even possible) or try to find some other way to make money (See: a plethora of in-app purchases, sections and levels locking you out if you don't pay, etc). If anyone else did it, I wouldn't be so skeptical, but EA releases locked content enough, I don't want to give them more reasons to release unfinished games.
