Updated MacBook Pros

Apple recently updated some of the specs on the macbook pro with retina lineup.

This is great news if you are thinking of buying a macbook pro soon as the superseded models will get some excellent discounts.
All 13" models now come with 8gb of ram standard and the 15" models come with 16gb of ram standard which is good since its soldiered on to the motherboard.

I am anticipating that DSE or Kogan might have a good sale on the superseded models soon so I reckon its worth holding off buying the new model.

These laptops may be expensive but the quality of these computers is amazing, the keyboards are excellent and the retina display is rather mesmerising!

I'm currently looking at a desktop setup, not sure whether to buy an iMac or to just buy an external display to hook my macbook pro upto? Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Looks like it's just a small bump. Iris 5100 is also quite lacking in graphics power (doesn't even compare with entry level GT 820M). Not sure why GT 750M is bundled in the most expensive model, when it's the last gen NVIDIA and does not give significant boost to Iris Pro 5200 in the 15" MacBook Pro.

  • 12 inch macbook rumored to come out this year a bit later. I'm interested to see whats the deal with it. Apparently it will have a retina display.

Those decisions were never really something Apple made sense with. Confusing buggers they are.

    • The 12 inch macbook is going to essentially replace the macbook air. The 750m is a capable card, you don't buy a mac for hardcore gaming though.

  • The $2999 model comes with a 512GB SSD not 256GB

  • iMacs (and other brands of All-in-Ones) are laptop technology built into a monitor. Apart from looks (may be relevant if the PC will live in your loungeroom or your business's reception), its the worst of both worlds.

Depending on whether you need more power or more convenience, I recommend getting either a laptop or a standalone desktop unit.

    • Hahah, "the worst of both worlds"
First time I read that, got a good laugh out of that, and a good point. Consumers tend to make purchase decisions based on emotions and looks ( including me sometimes, especially with women ) for the way it looks, and for most normal users those specs should do for a few years. People in the know will go for top specs if they can afford.

      • Yeah was looking at the 27" maxed out but thats around $3k which is a sizeable investment. I have a 13" rMBP and a 11" air but am looking for something with more gaming capabilities like the 780 in the specced 27". I have always been impressed by the quality of apple macs, you pay for what you get at the end of the day. I switched from Windows and the transition was pretty seamless.

    • There's plenty of people who don't need a laptop, but just a good all in one that saves space on their desk. The iMac is for those people. A desktop computer would just be a waste of space and extra cables to connect.

  • I am sure you have probably already seen this listed here if your currently hunting for a new older (pun intended) MBP or iMac.

Thanks for the tip about DSE running out the older ones cheap. I checked and sure enough - $1499 for the older version of the model that Apple sell for $1849. Happy days.
