Would you use a mobile app that allows you to scan product barcodes to enter proof of purchase competitions directly

What if you could win cash, holidays and other prizes simply by doing your shopping? The Nabbit application gives you access to the biggest and best Australian competitions that you can enter by simply scanning the product barcode.

Would you use this application?

[EDIT]

Thanks to Toristo for the feedback - I have included some more information about the app and entry process here:

There are a few more steps involved with my app, the full journey to entry would be:

  • User gets notified of the competition via facebook, the application or email
  • User purchases item in store
  • User scans the product barcode
  • User is taken to a competition page pre-filled with their details
  • User enters the receipt number (or users the phones camera to upload an image of the invoice for proof of purchase)
  • As will all proof of purchase competitions, you would need to retain and present the receipt as proof of purchase if you are the competition winner

The App also features a shopping list functionality where you can scan product barcodes to add them directly to your list - the difference with this one is that it recognizes over 90% of all Australian products.

The next phase of this application would be a rewards program where members are rewarded with points for scanning products to their shopping list and entering competitions. Members would then be able to redeem these points for coles / woolworths gift vouchers and other consumer products.

What do you think?

Agree. The challenge is actually getting people to buy it before scanning.
This might be like having a QR code printed on the inside of the package - it adds cost to the print process (even with high speed/low res sprays) that most companies probably wouldn't bother with then they can just say "cut off the current one".

(I'm not trying to dissuade you, I love it when people get an idea and throw it open. You'll get people tell you its dumb, it will never work etc - keep pushing if you think it's worthwhile. Some things will be obstacles, others are just in your head. Jeez- look at twitter!? Who would have thought that was going to be a "thing" 10 years ago)

Not sure what happened to my last reply so will re-post:

You are 100% correct; this is the biggest hurdle we, or any proof of purchase competition platform faces; make it too easy (just scan the barcode) and people will exploit the process, make it too hard (scan a copy of the receipt, cut out the product barcode and post or email in and no one will enter (unless the prize is HUGE).

      Great, thanks for the feedback!

Coke are going to be one of the first brands we approach when the app is live as they have a great rewards program and really need some thing like this to make it easier to keep track of points & rewards :)
