      • I think that would work, granted you dont use the cardboard app to play it (it would duplicate it and you'd have 4 movies side by side).

  • So this is so you can have your phone right up next to your forehead for hours on end right?

    • Yup - Google figured that we do want to keep our phone in that position all day anyway - so they devised a hand-free way of letting us do that ;-p; and with some added benefit.

    • +2

It's a cheap virtual reality emulator, $11 for a gadget that you'd likely use a few times then shove in a draw is better than the $400+ starting price for VR headsets that most people would never be willing to pay for.

I'm not sure if your alluding to the theory's of phones causing cancer but if you are then I'd like to point out that there has never been any scientific evidence to suggest that phones or radio frequencies cause cancer in humans or any other animals.

      • +1

I don't think it was meant to be a serious comment :)

  • +3

Sometimes I wonder whether Ozbargainers are actually sane.

  • Soooo

Do we need the NFC Tags or not? My phone has NFC.

    • I'm curious too. Can't seem to figure out what NFC offers?

      Anyone able to clarify?

      • +3

I found out what it does.

SO For those like me and Mudkipz that are like wtf is the NFC for if it's not needed?

All it does is launch the Cardboard app when you place your phone on it, to close it up. Of course it's not needed because you can just launch the application your self.

So you DON'T need the NFC Tag, all it does is auto launch the app.

        • +1

          Cheers mate

      • According to its FAQ, NFC can open the apps automatically when you put your phone into the cardboard, which seem useless from my point of view.

    • +1

The NFC tag is just programmed to start the "Cardboard app" which has all the cool VR stuff. It's literally the same thing as tapping the on the app to start it before you put in the cardboard holder. So yeh it's not necessary

    • The nfc is only for launching the cardboard app when it's inserted in the gizmo.

  • How far does the phone sit from your face when this is on?
I just downloaded the app on my Xperia z1 compact and I can't focus on the image unless it's between 20cm and 30cm which seems like its too far away?

    • +5

That's why the google cardboard have implemented lenses into their product.

    • I have a Sony Xperia Z1 (non mini though) and it works just in the normal position, I just had to move the magnet "switch" to the opposite side of the cardboard VR since it wont work in the default location for the Z1. It may not work for you because the mobiles screen is not up to par (Doesn't work with my old S2 either)

  • This will go well with my cardboard space ship!

    • Remain in outer-space, and do not enter earth's atmosphere - and you would be good without rain then.

      • Moisture might not be a problem, but UV makes short work of cardboard in space.

      • I haven't taken off yet.

  • But it doesn't sound as cool as occulus rift. Riffffffft. Occulus. Multi BILLION dollar technology.

which had it's soul sold out to Facebook, a company that thrives on building user numbers and making moolah from ads.

      • LOL scrimshaw, Futurama episode "A Biclops Built for Two"?

  • so I suppose you cant view straight 2D if you get motion sickness right?

    • Straight? It's 2014, bud.

  • Sorry to ask a novice question…

but what exactly is this used for ? to view maps via "binocular" style ? see the surroundings in a "binocular" style again ?
    ….. and so on.

    • +1

It is now currently a tech demo for virtual reality using a mobile phone. A placeholder. But it's also important that this is open source, both hardware and software, meaning that any developer can develop games and apps that take advantage of this API without actually needing to buy an expensive VR headset from Oculus or Sony, they can just make one out of cardboard for testing purposes.

I think it's an ingenious idea, phones nowadays can cram 1080p resolution into a 5 inch display, plus they already have all kinds of sensors built in meaning that the phone makes up for 95% of the parts of a VR headset. And pretty much everyone has a smartphone.

  • +2

Wow! I actually have one on my ebay watch list for $30 USD! This saves me 66%!

  • +6

I really want to get this but my wife will flip out. Not because I wasted $11 but because I have a cardboard box on my head with my phone inside it.

      • +5

Ended up ordering one. Express shipped from their Australian warehouse for $35.05 USD

Should arrive early next week. Can't wait :)

Edit: Here's how I got this price in case anyone is interested.

First you need to register for their newsletter at http://aud.dx.com/ to get a $5 coupon emailed to you (min. order $40). The form can be found at the bottom of the page.

Add the glasses ($39.18 USD) to your cart.

Now add this 87 cent 3.5mm Splitter Plug to bring the total over $40. You now automatically qualify for free express shipping as well as meeting the minimum spend requirement for the $5 discount code.

  • Any site or dev forums with demos etc?
Or is it google app store.

    I have a wp8 :/

    • +1

"g.co/chromevr" go there using chrome(on your mobile) and there are a few more demos you can check out.

  • What do you guys reckon the shipping times will be like? I've never bought from DX before. Anyone able to comment on what they're like?

I am way too eager! (Just wasn't eager enough when kits were more expensive haha)

    • Bout a month or more… No better

      • Yes, by the time mine arrives I am hoping that someone has a killer use for the cardboard :)

        • Mine still shows as "order processing", looks like it's going to take a very long time. Probably buying from their Australian site would have been much quicker:
          http://aud.dx.com/product/neje-zb01-diy-google-cardboard-vir…

        • +1

          @skc:
Darn it, I was looking for the Aus version of the site for this very reason.

But couldn't find it, so now I'm just another "order processing" sucker.

  • I have a galaxy mega 6.3, would it fit in this cardboard vr contraption?

  • No one commenting on how dodgy the rubber band holding the whole body together is with this one? In the image it's even covering the magnet your meant to be pulling. I believe all the others have the velcro instead.

    • +1

Maybe because people realise that it comes with Velcro so the rubber band is likely so it stayed together for their photo shoot without needing to attach the Velcro (which is shown next to it in the image)

      ??

  • Ordered one out of pure curiousity. Thanks OP !

  • +1

For diyers, try using a black snorkeling mask to make one. Much more comfortable than stiff cardboard. Or maybe this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Flip-Up-Welding-Goggles-Protectiv…

  • Thanks OP, I bought one yesterday. Looks like good timing as now sold out.

  • I think the price is quite reasonable because its cheaper than my DIY cost. Here is my list
1 x Cardboard $0 (the box of my blender machine)
1 x Rubber band $0 (the one used to warp Bok Choy)
    2 x Magnets ( d=2cm) $2.8 (a pack of 15 pieces from Daiso)
2 x Lens (d=2.3cm) $5.6 (two magnifying glass from Daiso)
2 x Pairs of Velcros $3 (from bigW)

so the total cost is $11.4 which not include my labor cost :)

PS: when I using my Sony XPERIA S LT26(4.3' screen), I still see two separate screen. But switching to my GF's HTC one M7(4.7' screen), I can merge to one screen.

    • Yeah, I've head the cardboard cutting can take a good hour if you're doing it by hand. So this will be sweet to have it pre-cut.

  • +1

Thanks OP. The one on your link is out of stock, but I ordered one here:

    http://www.dx.com/p/neje-zb01-diy-google-cardboard-virtual-r…

It also has free shipping (7-10 days).

  • anyone had theirs posted yet?
i got an email a day after buying saying something along the lines of "payment recieved, your order is being processed, we'll tell you when its shipped."
still no notification that its been shipped yet.

    • Yes. I got my shipping notice. Will update when i get it

      • Good to hear. Out of curiosity, how soon did you order from when the deal was posted, and did you choose drop shipping?

I've already downloaded a bunch of apps/demos in anticipation. Even going "magic eye" on them is enjoyable (although very very blurry).

    • aparently mine was shipped yesterday, long wait ahead :D

  • i clicked on the link on my original email to find this…

7/29/2014 7:16:44 PM Order Processing One or more of your items are temporarily out of stock.

    -_-

    • That sucks. When did you order?
I never got any postage notification, but in my order status it says its been posted.
FYI, I ordered a good few hours after the deal was posted, and ticked drop shipping (I though it might be the faster option).

  • +1

    FYI:
    Ordered 21 Jul 2014
    Shipped 22 Jul 2014
    Received 6 Aug 2014
    I'm in Melbourne.
    Putting it together now…

    • +1

      How to put together: https://gweb-cardboard.appspot.com/

My "cardboad" came pre-folded. But the wrong way around.
The plastic lens doesn't seem to be all that good… (Could just be my eyes though).
Mine doesn't have double sided tape to hold the goggles together.
Because of the way it was packaged parts of the cardboard have been pinched/creased. This combined with low quality cardboard used means it's not holding up all that well. Even on first use.

      • Odd that it came pre-folded, the pic shows it flat in a plastic bag.
Is yours the NEJE brand one as per this deal?

        • +1

Sorry. What I meant was that the "goggles" were pre-folded and packaged flat. But it was folded inside-out or the wrong way around. Instead of having the magnet on the left. It would be on the right. Easy enough to fix. Just fold along the creases in the opposite direction (the actual way google instructed).

  • Can someone give a review of what they think of it, and if the quality is good? Considering on getting one.

    • +1

This is fine if you are just using it a few times. But because the cardboard isn't very good quality. I don't think it will hold up for very long.

But I think that will be the same of all the cardboard - cardboards. I'm looking to get a plastic one but I want one with glass lenses.

    • +1

I got one and personally I wasted my money. Nausea inducing overall and the 3d isn't too great, just a 30 second proof of concept.

  • +2

Mine came today. Very easy to assemble, less than a minute. I don't know if its the lense or my phone but I'm not getting the 3D effect - still see two separate images. Google Earth seems to work best

    • I had to "adjust" the position of my lenses a little. That and I think your eyes need a little bit of time to adjust to the "goggles".

    • Dang I haven't got mine yet. Did you just use the default shipping?

    • +1

Got mine also, looks like a nice waste of money :D good for about 5 minutes

    • Yeah, mine took a little bit for my eyes to adjust.

And I had to push the cardboard that held the lenses in a few mm.

      • Yeh, first time I used it, I couldn't see anything clearly. Takes a bit to get used to.

  • Same results here as most other people.
A fair use of $10 for the experience/novelty.
Takes some time for your eyes to morph the 2 images together properly (sometimes using it upside down will help).
However, I will say I was very underwhelmed at the 3D effect. Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasnt as amazing as I though it would be.

P.S., if you are considering getting a plastic one, I'd advise against it atm. Its not something you will use much. Get a cardboard one for fun, then if more content comes out later, get a plastic one which will certainly be cheaper & better by then.

  • got mine today as well, not bad, adjusted the lens a mm or so, not bad for 10 bucks,

  • Finally received mine over the weekend. The cardboard is actually thinner than I have hoped, i.e. probably won't last long. Figured out that I have remove the case from my phone (Nexus 4) to get the correct distance from the lens to screen so I don't see double images. Unfortunately most cool VR apps on Google Play require a controller to move around. Not sure whether I'll invest another $20 for a bluetooth gamepad.

    • OTG cable + PS3 controller if you have one.
I also glued some rubber bands and stuff to mine to make it hands free.
