28 Degrees and International Credit Card Verification

I'm trying to buy some items from iherb.com and as it's my first transaction with them they require a "International Credit Card Verification" where they charge a small amount in US dollars to my 28 Degrees credit card and then ask (me) to verify what the amount in US dollars they charged to my card.
Sounds easy to do but I've contacted 28 Degrees and they have been no help in telling me what the U.S dollar amount is.

According to 28 degree customer service all they can tell me is what the corresponding converted Australian dollar amount on my card which I can see anyway by logging in. According to the iherb instructions there also should be an authorization code for this transaction as well - 28 degrees customer service cannot tell me what that is either.
Am I missing something? Surely they can tell me what the US dollar amount is? To get this info do I have to go one level up and contact Mastercard Australia directly - if so anyone got a contact number for them?

Thanks for any replies.

  • If you have a look at your statement (when it comes out) it shows the rate.

    i.e. 6.42 AUD, 6.00 USD Rate: 1.070000

Don't bother with 28 degrees centre, it's basically useless :/

Until the statement comes out, you can't see the USD amount, just the AUD converted total.

Also, make sure you configure paypal to charge in the local currency. Paypal are deliberatly sketchy with the setting: http://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/22ewbo/is_there_a…

  • Thanks for the reply. Yes you're right, it will be on the statement but that won't be out for a few days or more and I need the info now to get a free shipping promotion before the end of the month.
Anyone else know another way to find the US dollar amount?

They use the mastercard exchange rate.

    Not sure it's perfect.

The payment i made was on the 4th of June, date posted on the 6th.

It says the USD-AUD exchange rate on the 4th (and the 7th) was 1.069519, when my credit card was charged at Rate: 1.070000

I'd make an educated guess off that.

    • Interesting the exchange rate on the 3rd, was 1.071696

so the average of the two (3rd and 4th) was 1.0706075, much closer to 1.070000

Early 4th, would be late 3rd in the US. So that could be a reason why the currency conversion on the website is different.

  • Yea I had this problem too. The statement lags a few days behind. Not sure why, it's bloody 2014!!

Ask if they will accept a scan of the credit card (omitting some numbers) front and back, and also a passport scan. I've done that before.

  • You should see the amount before the end of the month though.

  • Will they actually complete the charge? or just put it in the pending state?

  • +1

Dont be too concerned about the shipping deal they have

Its for 4lbs and worth $4

I find its better to get the $8 for 8 lb shipping via DHL, plus if you go over you get each 1 lb for $1, whereas the free shipping deal is limited to 4 lb max

    • Not to mention it is pretty hard (at least for me) to find something under 4lbs that costs more than the required $40 to get free shipping!

  • I'll assume you've already tried their online facility? They have most recently updated their systems and it appears that transactions now appear as "pending" and we no longer need to wait days before it appears on the bloody transaction list.

I only noticed this the other day as my folks were travelling and noticed a new row appear on transactions made, with the 'pending' status - just like I would see it on my CBA credit cards.

    • Yes, thanks - online just shows the Aus dollar amount.
Good news is I converted the A$ amount dollars back to US$ using the exchange rate on the day and iherb accepted it as correct so using the exchange rate is accurate.
Still believe 28 Degrees customer service should be able to supply this basic info though!
