Sleeping bag for backpacking

Hi ozb.
Wondering if anyone has experience with any ultra light sleeping bags? Going to Japan for skiing next year and will probably be sleeping on friends loungeroom floors. Will need a 0c to minus 10c rated sleeping bag I think, but also must be super compact and light.
I'm aware this may cost $200+, but cheaper is better for me.
Any anecdotes greatly appreciated!

  • I've got a kathmandu one, and despite the brand, very happy with it. It's not ultralight though…

    • make sure you have a roll mat of some description, a better night sleep and provides insulation
    • down feather are the best insulation, but the most expensive
    • Mummy bags are warmer, but you dont get as much movement. (not good if you light to wiggle your toes in bed)
    • Make sure you have a good sleeping bag liner, keeps you warmer, and your bag cleaner.
    • Have a look at TRS! you can probably get a gst refund if you buy it all at the same time
    • Hm I was hoping to just get away with the single item as I'll be backpacking for a bit. Roll mats seem extremely bulky. I'll have a look at kathmandu, thank you!

      • You've slept on a hard floor? It's not nice :/

        3 main types.

solid foam - self inflating - inflatable.

        << bulkier & cheaper. Smaller & Expensive >>

Solid foam mats you can get from bigW for <$10. The more expensive ones are the z lite

self inflating mats are half foam, half inflation. As the foam expands from being compressed, it pulls more air in and inflates the mattress. I have a prolite link

The ultimate in ultralight is the inflatables.. like this. The ones that are basically frames are ultra small and light.

And you can get some hybrid luxury camping ones, which are thick inflatables with a foam upper.

        • Wow, neo air x lite looks crazy! I don't want to know how much that is.
I have slept on floors before. A good nights sleep is probably essential when skiing every day though.
The ozbargainer in me prefers floor… Might even be able to find a spare mattress lying around friends' house :D
