What to do with bags of coins

So I have accumulated alot of coins (5c, 10c, 20c, 50c and $1) and was wondering what do you regularly do to put them to full use? It's a pain carrying a coin pouch around.

Do you know if I can bring the whole bag to the bank and deposit it (and maybe having to face the annoyed teller counting $300 worth of coins)?

i take the coins to the DIY coin counting machine at CBA and it prints out a little receipt, which you take to the teller to deposit it into your account, or take as Cash. It's free for CBA customers but they charge 10% for non-CBA customers. Otherwise, you can take it to the teller and they will chuck it in the coin counting machine (that's behind them) for you

    • The last time I did this I was ripped by over a $100. The CBA customer service person overseeing the machine at their Chester Hill Branch agreed coilns were sticking and said they would contact me at the end of the day it they never did.

The day prior to going to the bank I had stacked up my coins had at least 35 piles of $10 stacks in $2 coins and 10 piles of $10 stacks in $1 coins.

The machine only spat out a receipt for $315.

      Go figure

  • Best idea is to find a bank branch that has a coin counting machine.

If they have one at the bank that you have an account with, you won't be charged for the use of the machine.

Go to woolies /coles at night when they are quiet… pay cash in self serve is another (slow) option.

I do this when i am getting too many coins.

    • done this many times with a bag-o-coins

  • just go to the bank and put it in a coin counter. Get the receipt take it to the teller and pick up the money.

go to the TAB, bet on the #4 dog.

  • just feed the self checkout machine at the supermarkets….just did that with a big bag of 5c coins

  • I normally put my change in the parking meters, but they don't accept 5c coins and to a maximum of 24 coins!

  • I run a vending machine business and regularly have to bank bags of coins. The tellers at my local (ANZ) are happy to put it through their counting machine for you and change into notes, or bank it if you want.

Just grab some coin bags from your bank. I regularly bag them up and take in to deposit when I have about $300.
They simply weigh your bags to check they are correct (if you put only one type of coin in each bag) and it takes little time.

  • I convert all my 10c, 20c and 50c to 1$ coins at the local coin laundrette.

    • this works for coke machines too i think. they spit out 2 dollar coins if you refund as I recall… haven't done it for a while though

  • Put the coins in a money box or jar. Every couple of months, empty the box/jar and count the coins into the little plastic snaplock moneybags available for free from all banks.
Then cash in the full bags at your local bank. If the bags are "correct weight" the bank will not fuss about changing them for notes. And you might be pleasantly surprised by how much you've saved……

  • If you are going to use a coin counting machine at the bank, PLEASE check for rejected coins underneath. At the bank I used to go to, every time I used it I would find other people's rejected coins. The machine doesn't always get it right on the first go.

  • I use mine for parking. Considering that the melbourne cbd charges $5.50/hr now & with many meters not accepting anything but coins I am in perpetual need for coins.
