TRS on check in luggage?

Hi all,

Just wondering has anyone able to claim TRS for check in luggage? It's gonna cost us more than $300 for two people. So thought might as well claim it if possible? As far as I know you have to show the item, but maybe someone successfully did it before? Cheers!

there is a trs counter on the ground level. go there before you are checking in your luggage.

        http://www.perthairport.com.au/PassengerInformation/T1Intern…

Travellers can claim the refund from Customs and Border Protection officers at the Tourist Refund Scheme counter, located on the first floor of the current International Terminal (T1), immediately after completing Customs and Border Protection formalities when departing Australia.

  • i have issues like this and have informed them because it does not fit a overhead luggage and larger then the baggage itself it had to go in the checkin luggage and they were fine with that after they looked at the invoice - the technical documentation stating the length of the item …

    • so you are successful then?

  • Good question as I am planning to do the same.
Maybe take a photo of them with you in the picture on your phone just prior checkin the suitcases.
And than show it to the TRS officer?

    • yea, thought of the same, not sure if they believe…guess it's all about luck hey

    • all they have to do is stamp your inv at customs. At BNE airport it's down on ground level.

The biggest hassle is when inside the airport, if the q is long & someone has 10 inv's & don't speak English it could take a while. This happened at MEL when there was a flight to China & many Chinese had bought hundreds of pills (herbal ?) & some inv's were under $300 & the people didn't understand why they could get refunds on those inv's.

They say if your flight is boarding, they won't refund as it may hold up flight, so always get to airport early.

For things that need to go checked luggage (like liquids, aerosols, gels, and oversized), go to the Customs & Border Protection Client Services desk prior to check-in and they'll sight the goods for you, though you still need to visit TRS to show the receipts.

At Perth International, it's located on the Ground Floor behind escalators near the QANTAS customer service counter.

Not all desks are run 24/7, so contact Customs at the airport ( Perth Intl: 1300 558 287 ) beforehand to see if they'll be open.

  • What if my checked bags are the item I want to make claim. Where is the CBP located in Sydney airport?

    • From memory it is in near the lift in the middle of the terminal on the bottom level. Under the information area

  • I've done it at Sydney for checked luggage. I think the rules are just that it is too big for carry on. I claimed TRS on a snowboard on my way to Canada. There's a different TRS counter downstairs where you have to get it checked and then it was fine. Check with your local airport but they should have a way around it.

can even do it at Gold Coast. Last time there had to tell them at check in & they called over customs guy who spent about a second looking at gear & then stamped invoice & then got paid "inside" int departures at TRS desk.

  • So I have test it. And failed.
You must show over sized items before checking them in at the different Custom desk. In Melbourne, it is located at the front door, upon the entry to the Terminal. They will stamp your invoice (a proof that they saw it), then you can give your luggage bags away. After all security checks, passport control, etc, proceed to the normal TRS and claim your refund.

Whatever product/products you are going to claim, bring the BOX and the original special TRS-only receipt to the TRS counter. They will honor this.

    • you don't need the box. Use can use the items before you take them overseas.

You don't need a special receipt, just the normal tax inv. which shows GST paid (1/11th of total) but it must be dated within 30 or 60 days before (think it used to be 30 now 60) & each inv must be $300 or more.

If handwritten, it must be very clear. Had a minor problem once, with a handwritten tax inv. The merchant had stamped his details at top & ABN did not print very well. I had to call retailer to confirm ABN.

It was a big purchase over $3.5k (group of us bought gear) & was worth the call to get back over $300 GST.

BTW-inv's over $1000 must have a name & address on it. Not sure why.

If you spend $300 or more at one store, but not at same time, you can simply ask them to consolidate the invoices into 1. Not a big deal.

We usually claim GST back every time a group of us goes skiing O/S, about 4 times a year, so we do a lot of GST claims. Once we had a group of around 50. For simplicity, we tried to place all of the new gear in 5 big bags. The total was around $10k & we got it all put on one inv. Once we said there were 50 of us, no problem. We used the roughly $900 GST we got back to buy drinks for the group one night.

With 50 people averaged out at less than $20,but still bought a lot of beers at the bottle shop.

Your receipt must include your name and your home address. This fact came from the mouth of Australian Customs (or whatever their new name is now).

Yes you do. Again, this was confirmed to us/me by Australian Customs when we claimed our TRS on 10 Feburary 2015. I purchased a desktop HDD. When we handed the receipt, Customs asked to see proof. I showed him the box and that was enough.

    • No you don't need the box. I have claimed from TRS numerous times and have never once been asked to show the box.

      • we took a mountain of ski gear through Brisbane airport. No boxes wrapping either. I think san migel has been drinking too much of his product & getting confused with what he was told.

Some of the gear had been used for weeks & was actually a bit dirty. No problems with getting refund which we were counting on, as was well over $3000, which was roughly $400 each times 7 people. It was credited to our credit card within a few days & then used for spending on the trip.

        • Did you then declare it on re-entry? I got a whole spiel from the TRS lady about how I wouldn't be able to bring back any duty free and and would have to pay everything back when I re-entered. I kmownirs unlikely that they flag individual passports but I didn't want the hassle. I was intending to claim for my MacBook Pro and my iPhone, eventually just claimed on the iPhone to prevent hassles.

  • go to USA every month. Almost everytime I go I take something which claim GST back on, whether it be a new laptop or clothes.

Never any hassles at Brisbane airport, but just get there early. I have a nearly 2 hour drive from Gympie & traffic can be bad when get closer to Brisbane, so I always leave early & don't risk it.

You don't need to take boxes or tags.

You can use whatever you're claiming the GST back on before you go. They are not duty free goods.

  • Will they accept photocopies of receipts? I rather keep the original receipt with the packaging at home.

  • Anyone tried doing this with a laptop? Don't want to bring it overseas with me and just claim trs was going to get someone to take it back home for me after sighting

  • Just want to add to this threads, as I have found lots of great info here.

You can only checked in (for TRS ) oversized item, gel/cream/liquid bigger than 100ml/gram. All other TRS items have to be shown to the TRS stuff after clearing the custom etc.

JUst dropped my parents of to the Melbourne airport and accompany them with the checked-in TRS item, the officer does not need to check the item they just want to see the receipt and check what item that we want to put in the luggage. After they have confirmed the item they just stamped the receipt.
I have asked them to see if they need to see the item, as for my case we bought lots of baby cream such as bepantene, they said no.
They only interested if the liquid/cream item is bigger than 100ml/gram per item.

And +1 to go straight away to TRS claim after you got your boarding pass, as the queue seems to be crazy most of the time. We actually arrived in the airport 3 hours before departure time and get in right away after obtaining boarding pass. My parents just manage to clear the TRS (because of the queue) around 30-40 mins before the departure time.
