Are ordinary people allowed to buy from wholesalers if they are purchasing bulk amounts?

In general, would an ordinary person be able to go to a wholesaler in Australia and purchase 360 boxes of facial tissues?

I was reading something about requiring a trading license/card, a corporation, and various other requirements to buy directly from a wholesaler…

Has anyone had any experience? On my trips to China, I just rock up at a factory and buy clothes or get them to sew a particular set of t-shirts for me. I'm not sure if the restrictions are as lax in Australia.

  • Many companies and distributors in AU will only deal with companies, and even then they get to pick and choose, as they might have exclusive agreements with others.

I know as my wife has fun liaising with distributors locally and overseas to try and secure deals for bulk purchases for some things she does (not scoopon, LS, or anything like that).

it all depends on who you're dealing with.

Most will have minimum order value, others might ask for your ABN on top of this.

  • Depends where you live I guess. I know in Adelaide we have a wholesaler called cash and carry and you need an abn to gain access to membership but if you have the entertainment book card, that's an alternative as well

Often a sale price at Woolies or Coles is cheaper than you can get at a "wholesaler"

    • this^^^

colesworth sells common shit like cans of coke cheaper than the wholesaler

      • ^^^Seems that way on many items at the aforementioned Campbells cash and carry…..

  • I don't know about wholesalers but I do know there are places in western Sydney where you can buy things like that in bulk for good prices.

      …Costco?

  • 'Cash & Carry' in WA does, you need either an ABN or a Shareholder's pass (if you hold shares in Metcash). Borrow a card from someone who has one (I got one off my hairdresser the first time I went).
Some things are good prices like catering size glad wrap and bulk coffee capsules, stuff I though would be cheaper like coffee beans and Whiskas was more expensive than supermarket specials.
I daren't ask why you need 360 boxes of tissues but Coles own brand are $1 each which will be cheaper than branded ones from a wholesaler.

    • even at the height of the campbells cash and carry phase (ie. pre aldis, pre colesworth civil war) they werent cheap

      they offered CONVENIENCE

my dad would drive there in a wagon and buy everything he needed for business on one trip and be done with it

time spent nickel and diming was less time making money
