LG G3 Only $696, Outright Unlocked, Available from August 5th (Telstra)

320

So far this is the best price for a local stock + 24 months warranty (except not a 3GB RAM version, which only good if you are keen for direct phone recording function - illegal in Australia hence they only selling the 2GB RAM version due to this reason). So much cheaper than other flagship phones like Samsung S5, HTC One M8 etc PLUS a 2K screen, awesome ^_^

  • what's direct phone recording?

    • +1

Records both sides of call I guess

    • +1

when you dial or receive a phone call, you simply click that button on screen to activate phone call recorder which is very useful for business people, especially in Asia hence all the models in Asia have this (which is also the 3GB version). FYI, HTC One, One Max, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Nexus 5, LG G2, etc support direct phone record via software such as DirectCallRecorder etc apps, which is not as convenient as the integrated function built in phone as you have to run app on background all the time to make sure you can record calls

      • Hmm…. I thought this was a feature in all phones these days? My old GS2 had this from day one..

        • +1

it depends, similar to the camera shuttle sound, in Australia, most phones would not allow you to turn it off except iPhone ;)

        • +2

          @webtherapist:

I think you have it mixed around, in Australia you can turn off camera shutter sound. In other countries like in Asia, you can't turn it off with a separate app.

        • +2

@plmko: I've been using most phones from Telstra, especially Samsung's, I never can turn this sound off, unless you have the phone rooted (I meant apply other ROMs on it)

        • @webtherapist: i can second that, you cannot turn off the shutter sound on android phones sold locally in Australia because of privacy reasons. only way is if you root the phone.
and about the call recording, yes there are many apps that let you do just that and i used to do it on my HTC desire HD about 3.5 years ago.

        • @striker5950:
I don't think that is entirely accurate there my friend. As far as I am aware, using previous Samsung phones (S3 and S4).Generally do not have the ability to turn off shutter sound using stock Samsung rom. Not sure about HTC models such as M7 and M8. However, I know for a fact that Motorola Razr HD,Moto X and Nexus 5 do not have shutter sound when phone is on silent mode setting. Hence, Not every locally sold Android phone has to restriction of having Shutter sound permanently on, even during silent mode.

        • @Filster83:

I've had the Xperia Z since launch and always had the option on the stock Rom to disable shutter sound.

BTW anyone that has the G3 is it any bigger in the hand than say the Z2 or S5?

        • @Filster83:

I have an Australian stock samsung s3, there is no option to turn the shutter sound off, even in silent it still makes the noise. I have to a separate app for when I need to take pictures without interrupting people around me.
I would be happy to be proven otherwise though.

        • @linton:
          Mind to share which app?
I've tried a few and they still cannot turn off the shutter sound.

        • @linton: my stock nexus 5 has a silent shutter sound when the phone is on silent. bought from google play store so im guessing its an international thing.

          @Joe888:

The one I use is silent camera pro.
It's lacking in features that the stock app has, but is also lacking in sound. :)

      • The Telecommunications (Interception) Act 1979 (http://www.aca.gov.au/licence/tir.pdf) prohibits a person from listening to or recording, by any means, of a communication in its passage over a telecommunications system without the knowledge of the person making the communication.
In other words, without the clear and stated consent of all parties or with a relevant court order, the recording of telephone conversations in Australia is illegal.
In addition to Federal Law, State legislation also prohibits the recording of a private conversation. In SA, for example, recording private conversations attracts a fine up to $10 000 or imprisonment for up to a maximum of two years.

        • However doesn't make it illegal to have that function though.
Which the OP seems to think they aren't releasing the 32GB - 3GB Ram version in Australia because it is illegal.

  • You can record calls with tasker on android anyway. At least that's what I've been told…

  • +1

    thanks op.

except not a 3GB RAM version, which only good if you are keen for direct phone recording function - illegal in Australia hence they only selling the 2GB RAM version due to this reason

Out of interest where did you get that the extra GB of ram is for calling recording?

    • not for calling, just because LG manufactured the 3GB version for Asian market hence has that in-built call recording function, not vice versa ;)

      • +4

nice find. bad comment re connection between 3Gb version and the call recording function.

As I understand it, it is NOT illegal if you record a convo with you as one of the parties involves. It would be illegal if you use that recording for, say, blackmailing or other offences.

It should be noted that the recording that does not have the consent of the other party or parties could not be used as evidence in Court.

        • Not sure about this, I thought you have to notify the call is being recorded, similar to when you call a call centre

        • TRUE unless you state that this call in being recorded at the beginning of the conversation

  • +5

Lol the 16gb will have 2gb ram and the 32gb will have 3gb ram which will undoubtedly be released in Australia. Conversation recorder has absolutely zero to do with it. The 32gb with 3gb ram is already available in europe and the states

  • +5

Lol. not sure how you got down to the conclusion that 32gb (which has 3gb ram) is banned in australia because of call recording…

Even if it was banned because of call recording, they can easily remove that feature then release. They don't need to gimp the hardware to 2GB just to remove Call Recording.

As said above, it isn't illegal to have that feature, if it was illegal to have that feature then all call centers will need to be shut down because they all have this feature on their phones.

Which is why they always read the disclaimer "This call is being recorded for training purposes, if you do not want your call to be recorded please speak to the operator".

It hasn't been released yet in Australia purely because it is Australia. We get things later than everybody else, and we pay more than everybody else. After 1 month or so, you will most likely see it being released.

  • I checked the link out, but it didn't say anything about it being unlocked?

Will this still have shitty telstra branding and software loaded on it.

    • +1

Most likely will have Telstra branding but be unlocked.

    • Telstra outright = unlocked, just like the Sony Z2 price when it's first launched which is $670ish

  • It seems you need to be a business customer.

Also assuming I found a business customer, doesn't say if the $250 credit applies for the outright price?

    • No idea how you came to that conclusion, it doesn't say anything at all in that regard, just that business customers can purchase the phone outright at the same price. Which really isn't required in the text because outright is outright, but I guess it was put there to avoid any confusion… somehow you ended up confused.

    • The LG G3 will be available for online pre-order from the 29th of July 2014. A limited time offer of a $250 VISA gift card with select pre-orders will also be available.

Business customers can also purchase the LG G3 from Telstra outright for $696 RRP.

      • "Select Pre-Orders" probably only for those who sign up for 24months on the $120+ plans.

    • if Tel$tra give $250 credit for that outright price, I think Optus and Voda would lodge a complaint to Fair Trading ;p

  • Or, you can get the 16GB variant shipped to your door for about ~$605 AUD from becextech. Received mine today, works great.
