Help clarifying information with Citylink (As CS is hopeless... and try get rid off you in under 2 Minutes)

Hey guys I accidentally turned into a Toll road (CityLink) from Flemington road. As I entered, I realised that there was one of those typical looking toll cameras. The moment I saw the camera and realised I was on a toll road, I took the next exit straight away (The exit was roughly 100 meters after I saw the toll camera. I had not intercepted more than one set of cameras. This morning I called up CityLink and the lady said it was a free trip. She rushed me to quickly hang up and it did not sound like she understood what I was trying to tell her. I’m not convinced with her answer and do not want a late invoice in three to four weeks from CityLink. There is no such thing as free when there is a road specifically for tolls. Can someone clarify with firsthand experience if it counts as a free trip? Or do I need to pay for the toll?

So my options from the lady are;
1. Pay for a trip I may not have technically made = $15.40
2. Wait 3 to 4 weeks for a late toll invoice + late fee + admin fee = $30
3. Take her word that it is a free trip, because she can’t access the system to tell me if I had used the toll road or not.

P.S Do you think toll roads Citylink/Eastlink will be permanent? Is this fair? What was the government thinking when they agreed to this contract??

  • If I read correctly, you entered at the cheese stick, and exited at the next possible exit which is Moreland Rd.
    I can't say if it was free or not, but if I were you, better safe than sorry, pay for a pass.

    Luckily for you, you entered in the Tulla Pass section of the tollway which means rather than paying $15, you can get away with $5.50 Tulla Pass

    Heres the link http://www.citylink.com.au/1091.asp

    • Thanks aroryo, you were pretty precise! What if I paid the $5.50 and it was classified as a free trip as a she said? Would they refund the $5.50?

  • I can't see why CityLink would give anyone a free trip. I think Tulla Pass is the way to go…if your trip fits the Tulla Pass conditions.

    However, if, for some reason, it was in deed a free trip (eg the cameras/computers weren't working or they couldn't read your number plate) then you won't be able to pay anyway, 'cos you/your car wouldn't be in the computer system.

    • Unfortunately you are wrong, you are purchasing a pass for a specific day. They don't care if you use the road or not you brought the pass.

    • You can buy a pass up to three days after you travel as well.

  • It appears you entered at the Flemington Road and left at the next exit which is Moreland Rd (check here)

    You can get away with buying a Tulla Pass which is $5.70…you can buy it from their site.

    You have 3 days from travel to buy it, and you'll be fine.
