Cheap back to base home alarm for Sydney suburb?

HI,

My current provider ADT says my back to base alarm system no longer works. They want to charge me $150 to have a technician visit and check the system. Any repair/replacement of the home unit costs would be on top of that. I think thats unfair considering that I have been paying them about $50/month for the past 7 years and I have no way to prove whether they have stopped monitoring on their end to strongarm me in to coughing up additional charges.

As a result I am in the market for a new back to base alarm provider. I see my current provider charges $200; but I was curious on what ozbargains use and recommend to safeguard all the bargain goods we have hoarded.

Thanks!

V.

  • I'm genuinely curious why you bother spending money for an B2B alarm system. If some junky breaks into your house, it's going to take 45 minutes for some security guy to come around to check the house, who has no powers other than to call the real police. Plus the junky will be gone in 5 minutes anyway.

  • You can buy cheap systems that will sms you an alert. Maybe that is a cheaper alternative?

  • Yes! That would work if it can text more than one number. Any brands/model you can recommend please.

    • Sorry, I can't recommend, but I have seen them on ebay and Dealextreme.
      See this search for examples:

I believe there are models where the unit would replace your existing central unit, and you just connect the wires of your existing sensors. I would suggest asking some of the sellers that specialise in security for advice.
Note that an ALDI SIM card has 12 month expiry!

Let us know what you end up with.

  • There are many benefits to having your system monitored. Replacement of the whole system can be relatively inexpensive. With the the system monitored for around $35/month, I can offer you lifetime warranty.

  • How did you go with your hunting for house alarm?
