Burg Smartwatches 50% off @ BigW (BNE CBD)

80

These things are actual phones, not just an accessory (but can be linked to a full-size phone via BT). Two models, about a dozen of each, in black or white:

#16 ('Tokyo' - digital/touchscreen): $89 (was $178)
#14 ('Seoul' - analogue/pushbutton): $49 (was $98)

In-store only, not listed on the BigW site. Reputable specs are hard to come by; found a decent third party listing at one point, but it was late, and there was a noise outside, and now I'm scared. Adorable review of 16 here. Would be interesting to know what browsing the net on a 1.5" screen is like…

This is not a 'smartwatch' and doesn't display notifications from your smartphone, it's more like a standalone feature phone in a watch form factor and equipped with a basic bluetooth remote calling feature (Bluetooth Hands-free Profile)

It's a bit like wearing Series 40 Nokia on your wrist.

    • This model - the 16 seems to lack the ability to link with another phone in any way. The next models up - the 16A and B have that feature. They are also not at all waterproof - rendering them far less attractive as a real world appliance.

    • If this had Bluetooth tethering and 4G, I'd be on it like Donkey Kong. Does such a thing exist?

A large screen device for surfing, tiny device to do the mundane stuff. For when you need your phone with you to accept calls, but don't want to carry a 5" screen.

      • Yeah, Omate Truesmart. Some people in Australia have bought it and said it was pretty good.

4G eats battery life though, a watch running Android with 3G support will already have pretty short battery life.

    in a nutshell, a PITA!
i have the ZGPAX smartphone watch from DX with same 1.54" 240x240 lcd, browsing works but best for simplified websites like Google search page works fine, Ozb homepage, well you see tiny icons for photos, the first few words and not much else, you need a browser with good scaling, so prepare to do lots of panning then double tap to zoom in/out, youtube mobile site works ok and surprisingly smooth video, speaking of which forget anything but animated video clips, i have a few clips like Family Guy American Dad etc

Apps, um, how much time do you have? haha! hit and miss, some won't load(probably recognise screen too small) others will run but won't scale screen properly so some icons/buttons are offscreen making app useless, however i have a few apps including games that run fine.

Bottom line, if you jog or ride a bike a lot and don't want a large/heavy phone and just mainly do calls this is perfect, but if you do a lot of texting/IM/browsing forget it, i have used google voice to input words instead of tiny keyboard but it's hit and miss outdoors(too much background noise), also being Android 4.0 it has wifi tethering(but 2G only) so you can check email on any other device like a tablet/laptop etc where you have a phone signal but no wifi

ps if you have fat fingers the size of frankfurters don't even think of buying a watch phone without trying it first, if you can find a capacitive stylus with a fine point maybe it can work for you
