Health Fund for General Dental?

I'm trying to look for another health plan.
Currently, I'm on the Basic Extras 70 plan.

Whenever I go to get my teeth cleaned along with the x-rays and fluoride. The gap seems to be around $60. I know some dentists on ozbargain advertise that they will clean your teeth, x-rays and fluoride outright for $60 cash in hand… There is a person in my area that will do clean cash in hand for $50 mostly cheaper due to tax reasons.

I noticed on some plans they have fixed benefits that they pay out.
HIF pays out $53 for an oral examination, $107.15 for a scale and clean, $31.60 for a topical fluoride treatment.

This would go a long way to the general cost of getting my teeth cleaned. How much do you guys pay in general?

  • I'm on HBFs essentials for $4.XX something a week plus $100 gap saver which bumps it up to $6.XX something a week.

General scale and clean is free (1 or 2 free per year i think), my fillings are usually free too thanks to the gap saver. X Ray cost a little bit.

  • Hcf has its own dental centres where that is completely covered. Lowest is about 90 incl hospital a month full price. The offset is if you use chiro and physio etc, the rebates aren't as high as other funds.

  • Guys… I just made a call and they told me that is the maximum benefit that they will pay. I didn't get any information about how much on average will be paid out…

On average, I have no idea how much % I will get back from any of these health funds…

Does medibank really pay out more as %? I mean, there is no point having $107 for clean and scale when you are only getting 50% back. I don't know many dentists that charge $200+ just for clean and scale. Along with the examination fee and fluoride, it would mean to get the maximum benefit, the dentist would need to charge over $400.

I've been seeing my dentist since I was a kid… my parents had HCF and my parents never had to pay a gap..

I have bupa now and I never pay a gap… I suspect it's the dentist and what his standard charges are, how much work he actually does compared to what he is saying he does to make a claim.

so I get my teeth cleaned twice a year including examinations, Xrays and fluoride.. but I have never paid the guy a cent… and I've have been going to the same dentist for like 20 years,

same goes for any other service that requires a health insurance claim…

massage… the lady swipes twice for 1 visit… no gap therapist gets paid… we are all happy.

optical… get an exam done.. doctor swipes health fund card whatever he claims he writes down on my file as credit… and then I buy what ever I like from the store as store credit.. so my wife wants a pair of cartier specs.. not a problem… I get $200 or so limit and so does the wife.. that's $400 a year.. claim once in Christmas then again in january and that's $800 credit total for the specs

That is actually insurance fraud being committed by your optical provider. I feelings are if you provider is going to do dodgy things with insurance claims. Then they are more likely to do dodgy things when they come to providing a service to you

      • probably, dodgy stuff happens whether we like it or not… and happens more often than we like

I guess there are people that you go to for certain services and not for other things…
you wouldn't ask a plumber to fix your electrical work.
