Woolworths system glitch causes items under $10 to scan for free

Woolworths supermarkets briefly ground to a halt following a computer glitch on Thursday afternoon. The malfunction was reportedly causing all items priced under $10 to scan for free.

Staff at the Sydney Town Hall store told Fairfax Media they only ceased trading for about a minute. It is understood the problem occurred about 3pm and all stores are now back open and operating normally.

A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed there had been "some issues" with point of sale systems.

"We had a computer glitch. It was for a relatively short period and is now fixed," the spokesperson said.

"We're talking minutes rather than anything longer than that."

Woolworths said stores in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania were affected. But contrary to earlier reports stores did not shut their doors and the company did not issue instructions for all stores to be closed.

"We understand fewer than 20 stores stopped trading," a spokesperson said.

In a media release, the company apologised to customers for any inconvenience.

        • sigh, and to think i signed my uber account with your referral. I'm boycotting your referrals until i get gift cards from you :)

I guess that means you don't shop at the Townhall store since they dont have trolleys.

Who would had guess that the carbon tax made up 100% the cost of some products under $10

      • Woolworths said stores in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania were affected.

Yep…and the day after I do a $260 online shop at Woolies :( I was going to wait until today but my missus insisted we shop yesterday :/

Same! lol purely because I was given a $20 voucher (for spending $90) offer from Coles. Usually I always shop at Woolies.

      Curses! lol

  • Dang it! We went shopping on Wednesday. Just think of how many boxes of Kinder Surprise I could have bought … those Marvel twistheads are rather cute …

Must say, BigW Fountain Gate … yes I know ha ha … first ever I have come across serve yourself was only option. No check out girls available only the usual assistant through the serve yourself. Up until now I avoided self serve in an effort to support the employment of check out girls. Knew it had to happen sometime but I must say I was disappointed in BigW. I am all for free choice but there was NO CHOICE AT ALL offered when we shopped Wednesday evening.

  • I shopped at Woolies on Wed, at around 4pm for a few items under $10 but didn't get anything for free :(
