Cheap or free Melbourne CBD venue hire for charity event end of August

Hey all,

I'm just putting some feelers out in case anyone out there has a contact or can help me out but I'm looking for a Melbourne CBD venue that will offer up their function room for free or in the very least at charity rates for a charity event that I'm helping organise at the end of August. We need somewhere with a capacity for 200 people, has a licensed bar, has a kitchen, is located in the CBD and is available on Friday 29th August.

This is a small locally run charity aimed at helping the homeless and we usually organise events with little to no budget and rely on the generosity of others. If you would like some more information about the charity itself, feel free to PM me :)

In the meanwhile, I'm going to continue cold calling a few places.

    Start making phone calls, most places offer free venue hire if you are bringing in 200 people to spend money at their bar.

    I think that somewhere with an alcohol licence and kitchen in the CBD is very unlikely to give up their venue for free (or even very cheap) on a Friday night. Fri (and Sat) night would be the busiest time of the week for them, which means they'll lose out on a lot of money if they give it up.

    Not saying that it's impossible because there are some really generous people out there, but if you haven't already got the date of the event set in stone and if you want to maximise your chances, I would maybe suggest trying for a normal weeknight instead.
