"Experience" gift ideas for mothers 50th birthday?

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker but just joined up to ask for some of your expert help with ideas for an 'experience' gift to buy for my mother for her 50th birthday. Wanting to buy her something that we can do together rather than an object…. She loves cooking so maybe something food related would be good? Budget wise I'm a broke uni student so can't really afford to spend more than $350 absolute max… We are based in Brisbane as well if that helps.

Thanks!!

As a mum of similar age to yours with 4 boys of my own I would be a little dismayed if they spent $350 on a gift for me (mine too are studying). What I really appreciate is effort and thought. The best gift I received in recent times from one of my boys was some coffee beans, chocolate and bread, all from my favourite places. As he doesn't drive it would have taken some time for him to collect these gifts and he would have spent maybe $25. The other present I received was at Christmas my boys all got together and had a photo taken with Santa (it's a mum thing), I was so appreciative I actually cried. If you want to make it food oriented perhaps organise a picnic or dinner with all of her favourite foods. Just my thoughts.

I agree with Robbyjones. Your mum would probably be happy enough just to spend time together.

    Some ideas:
A pamper experience like a massage or beauty salon voucher etc
    A food related walking tour
A shared class at a cooking school
Home prepared dinner for your mum/family
    Picnic/dinner as per Robbyjones' suggestion

    Have fun!

edit: I saw there is a food and wine show in Brisbane in October — it's a couple of months away but could be worth considering.

How much time do you have? Grabbing a bunch of her favourite photos and ordering a photo book is a nice idea., If she's a bit edgy, a photo of her and a description of her likes/dislikes sent off to freecrappyportraits.com can be funny (depending on the artist!) I wrote my dad a poem once and he really treasured it, so much so he bought a frame and hung it on the wall. So many things you could choose to do!

This isn't exactly food-related either, but the wicker baskets do look like giant picnic baskets…

Shout her a hot-air balloon flight - an amazing experience to treasure.
