DickSmith recent 15% Mac products problem

Hi, put an order yesterday (15 Jul) for a Macbook Pro Retina and never receive a confirmation ever since but card charged with the full amount already, contacted DickSmith with both numbers start with 1300 for not least than 20 times, most of them cut off automatically and occasionally connected to an operator named Henry and he could not do any help at all except telling me to wait for them to ring back BUT never happens.

I so far know another person in the same situation like me, wonder anyone else stuck with this scam? And what should I/we do?

Mod: Title edited to remove defamatory statements.

Seriously, do you really think Dick Smith is likely to run a scam?

    • -5

Well, if you got charged and no response for a two day period so far, is it still not a scam even by acident or not?

      • +5

Personally, I don't think you can commit a scam by accident. I'd just call that an 'error' or even an 'accident'.

        • -4

But deliberately refuse to contact, otherwise I would classify it as 'accident'

        • @webtherapist: It sounds more like they have a lousy phone service. Nothing in your story seems like they're DELIBERATELY refusing to contact you since you only ordered yesterday. Also, there's been heaps of positive stories about DSE on here too, so yours may be an isolated incident.

It sounds like a case of bad customer service, sure! But you can't really throw around the word 'scam'.

  • +2

You might have had an error with the website. Without an order, the charge should drop off, as it would be "pending" atm regardless.

Far out, people these days call everything a scam. Omg woolies has no potatos in stock, must be a scam! Harvey Norman website keeps crashing, must be a scam

    • Does it mean we should be very glad as customers?

    • -6

But how about you was charged and not in touch, if Woolies charged you without sending any confirmstion, what you think?

      • +1

        its still not a scam

        • -3

How about i do this to you and release your money after a while?

        • +1

Well if you were an Australian business I'd think that it was pretty standard practice for this kind of situation

      • +4

There is a difference between poor customer service/human or system errors and a scam.
Read up on the definition of 'scam' before throwing it around, you could get yourself or Ozbargain/Scotty into trouble, see this for example https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/152466

        • Good spot. I googled "Dicksmith scam" and this topic appeared in top-10 results…

        • @cniminc:

I'm really torn about the case you list above. I saw it before it went offline (and have an archived copy) and there were a lot of worrying, genuine issues raised which have now been shut down due to legal threats. I get that the threats to the community and the mods are too high in Australia's legal environment, but it pains me to see warnings of really questionable behaviour removed.

On this front, the amended forum title is for the best, even though time and time again Dick Smith chalks up horror stories.

@tplen1: Hmm…correct..But what i found that this same thread was in top 10. I am unable to attach anything here, otherwise i would like to attach screenshot of google results.

Also…I am as worried as you for genuine warnings.

Harvey Norman website keeps crashing, must be a scam

nah i wouldn't go that far, but I would call that a blessing in disguise, crashing site means less chance of buying overpriced Hardly Normal goods!

Is it just me that's reading the OP's username, I presume / hope, incorrectly?

  • Sure you should contact them to let them know that the order hasn't gone through properly but you still got charged. And I think its not news to anyone that their support centre is often an incompetent joke that doesnt know or care what its doing. But screaming "its a scam its a conspiracy they've stolen my money" is shortsighted and not really very useful. You'll get the money back, just try a different approach if you aren't having any luck calling in. And if you aren't prepared to deal with incompetent overseas call centres then dont buy from dick.

  • Im in the same boat (3 purchases for mac mini with the 10% off on top of the 15%) through the app. No email, error error etc. This will be exactly the same as the Dell issue from a while back that we all jumped on (change display type get a great price). With Dell you had to wait about 3-5 business days for the charge to drop off the card you used (from memory took NAB about 7 days in total). I'll probably call them later this week I dont hear anything.

Just don't deal with them. All of these sales has been nothing but trouble.
I bought a pair of headphones recently and it ended up taking several weeks for them to finally realise they had no stock and to refund me.
I then tried buying a TV, with the Ebay deal. I hoped it would be different considering it's under their Ebay name and they wouldn't want to ruin their reputation. I ordered the product only to receive a fake consignment number. I waited 2 weeks then contacted them saying the delivery has not arrived. They ended up replying a few days later saying that there was a mix up and it had not been sent. A few days after that I asked for a refund and they said it was fine.

I've yet to receive my refund.

    • They sent me two TVs and then told me the first one's consignment number wasn't for a TV. Shouldn't have been so honest, as they clearly have no concept of stock control and wouldn't have told the couriers to stop delivering it.

  • I bought a TV off Dick recently from their web site. I got an invalid tracking ID so I rang support and they were no help. They also told me it was coming from the Carnegie store and it actually came from the Cranbourne store (both in VIC). It came about 4 days later but I had to be home all the time to be sure it was delivered OK. It was a good deal on a big TV with free delivery but I won't be going back to Dick.

  • Wow, I've had nothing but GOOD luck.

I've bought several 'super cheap' things from there and they've always been delivered; sometimes same day! and when I wasnt home, Startrack just dropped it at the depot; no problems at all.

Phone support is woeful, but if you call the business support line, they'll tell you you're in the wrong spot and transfer you. Works every time. (with basically every business).

  • I had the same problem with Dick Smith Robina. I ordered a 27" Imac with upgraded HD, Video card and RAM in mid February of this year, paid for it all and let me tell you it was cheap! No discount at all…even though I'm on the pension.
I was told it would take 2 weeks to receive but finally got it in mid April. I called them so many times but to no avail. Their staff would say 'call back next week' or 'the order is being made in the US'… and I finally asked to speak to their manager and was told he was not available, every time. I would not buy or recommend Dick Smith to anyone…awful experience and only had been back in the country for less than a year.

PS When I left Oz 25 years ago it was the place to go to buy electronics and always supported Dick Smith, not anymore.

    • and let me tell you it was cheap! No discount at all

did you mean it wasn't cheap? also, in my experience i don't know anyone who is receiving the pension and can afford full sticker price on Apple computers!

      • Yes…meant to say NOT cheap. Hopefully it will see me through for 5 years.

  • A lot of companies have call centres in the Philippines. Because of the huge typhoon over there a lot of the power and internet has been down in areas and staff will have been told to stay at home so it's possible that's why you can't have a response if they also outsource to the Philippines.. One of the joys of a global economy. We want cheap stuff but we also want someone Australian to speak to when there's an issue. Unfortunately there is a compromise and you can't have both at the same time… I'm sure if this is the case they will be able to help you once the storm has passed.
