Portable sewing machine to shorten office shirts' sleeve length, easy and useful?

hi all
many office shirts deal here, but all of them always too long for me (the sleeves).
shops charges $10, so i think its too expensive!

can anyone comment on this kind of portable sewing machine, are they usable for my purpose, easy enough and have good result?

  • It is hard to get good results on this kind of job even with a proper sewing machine.
I think you will get poor results, waste your money and ruin a shirt - but I admit I have not used these specific machines.

Machine 1 states "It is funny to make your own handkerchief, apron, gloves, cloth with this practical machine"

    • I agree, it would be funny.

Machine 2 states "Works on all fabrics"

    • Of course it would, it looks like a stapler

Machine 3 states "Mini Portable 2 In 1 Sewing Machine"

    • Has it got a bottle opener ?

Machine 4 states - "Get rid of big old machine and do stitches quickly and exquisitely
It is the best replacement for your big bulky old machine"

    • Sure it will.

These sort of devices would be best for sewing up rice bags. It would be like cutting the lawn with a pair of toe nail cutters.

How are they shortening the sleeves? Removing the cuff, cutting excess material, then resewing? tbh i reckon $10 is great value, and i have all the equipment to do it!

I've got number 2, which is a hand operated version of number 1. I wouldn't use it on anything nice. It's too gimicky.

What you need is a proper machine, even if second hand

  • They sell bands that you can wear on your arms over your shirt that make the sleeves shorter. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Metal-Shirt-Sleeve-Arm-Bands/dp/B004…. A bit like bicycle ankle clips so your pants don't get caught in the chain. Of course you can cheap out and use a rubber band too.

My mum will do it professionally for $8 each, she has the industrial sewing machines and over-locking also.
