$1 Buys 4 Packs of 2 AA or AAA Alkaline at Coles

650

This deal fulfills Ozb requirement on multiple levels including:

a. Smashes the closest competing products by 80% in rrp (normally 49c for a pack of 2)
b. Then take another 50% off

12.5cents buys you a battery as good as a $1 energiser. Doesn't take a genius to realise that its probably below cost. I have a feeling that a disgruntled nerdy employee of the pricing department is trying to rip Coles off or something. Its hilarious to see a 2pack of energisers next to this is selling at $3.50

It was an "on special" sticker in coles randwick. i thought it might be available elsewhere.

Important, just clarifying why these are Way better than those you buy at reject shops.

Alkaline batteries by their design, is far superior in terms of leak-proofing, internal resistance, capacity, and shelf life - than Zinc Carbon batteries, which are what you call "heavy duty" and "super heavy duty"

eveready's cheaper options are zinc carbon. brandless batteries that dont say "alkaline" are definitely zinc carbon.

Take it from me, that these are the only batteries you'd want to buy, unless your gadget prefers rechargeables, lithiums.

  • not sure if it's as good as energiser but it's definitely cheap!!!!

    • haha yeah… and twenty-one years of power?
      whoa.

  • +1

I use them… not too bad, not the 'cheap and nasty' you'd except any ways… good for spares to keep around the house when the remote dies or something…

hopefully this deal is available in my area, stock up a draw with them ;)

  • I don't understand what does it mean with the "Powers 21years of Xmas presents for a BigMac".
    Anyone care to enlighten me?
    bigmac?? what's that?

    • +1

I believe kimmik means "for the price of a Big Mac". But I don't think it needs to be in the title.

I'm not sure what the battery endurance claim is based on either. It would depend on the type of presents, and more importantly, on the true quality of these batteries.

      • ah thanks :)
but as far as I know, bigmac price is around $4.40 :D

      • If i could afford energiser batteries, i'd test them side by side.

  • arrgh such a confusing title/description!
    +1 to a local bargain!

  • Was just about to list this myself, but for 49c a piece.

There was nowhere on the ticket saying 4 for a $1 at my store. And i bought 3 packs, so i don't know if the deal was valid when it goes through the checkout. Bloody hell, why did i have to buy 3 packs. :(

I saw a lady buying them which made me go and get some, and she was buying about 10-12 packs.

I think i'll go get 4 packs tomorrow to see.

    • yeah its 49c each.. just got myself a pack now :D
looks like they are worth 50c each tho.. pretty poor quality.. and shouldnt be supporting non-sustainable practices.. but hey cheap batteries!

  • I don't see how these batteries would be any better than those 50 packs you get see at the Reject Shop for about $4.

    • And those ones (from variety stores) can be really useless, not even enough power to turn a small globe on, a waste of money.

      • yea they don't last very long and they also leak etc a lot more likely, trust me I used to use them 48 for $3~

      • Reject Shop ones are usually not alkalines

        • Please excuse my ignorance, but i thought alkaline batteries are the cheapest for AA. What other types can they be if they are not alkaline?

          • +1

@pauly: Google Zinc Carbon batteries. The best alkaline batteries could potentially last ~7 times as long as a poor zinc based battery. Although in reality the difference isn't usually as big as that.

          • @pauly: Are regular AAs NiCads? :)

            • @SomeGuyOnOzB: Nicads or Nickel-Cadmium batteries are a rechargeable battery not just like a normal regular AA battery. They are usually more expensive as they are rechargeable.

              • +1

@Converse1977: Yep, and NiCads are obsolete due to poor capacity and toxicity in landfills. replaced by NiMH, which are ur typical AA rechargeables thesedays

There are only four types of primary (non rechargeable) AA/AAAs as far as i'm aware:
1: cheapest is zinc carbon, good only in low drain like clocks. not even wiimotes
2: alkaline, good for most uses
3: oxy-alkaline is similar to alkaline, but designed for higher drain eg camera/flash
4: 1.5v lithium, lighter than above options, higher capacity, costs an arm to replace unless there's an ozbargain post on it lol

  • hahaha ok you guys got me. I was having too much fun trying to spruce up the title. if anyone here reads engadget, you'd understand what i was trying to do. yes i meant "for the price of one bigmac", and 21years cos that's how many presents i have. in theory.

  • Couldn't find any at my local store in Adelaide :( Still a +ve though

  • just bought a whole bunch at hurstville, nsw. :)

  • bought a lot just now from wangaratta

  • Just bought a bunch from the Melbourne Central store. They only had AAA, with about 30 packs left on the rack.

  • Thanks for the tip - I cleaned up the shelves in Brandon Park. I am having a quite day in Sunny Melbourne, with the kids occupied :)

  • None of the Coles I go to (in Melbourne) seem to have ever stocked these Coles batteries.

  • I've been using these for a fair while with pretty high powered torches etc, and they are pretty darn good. Last quite a while, and for the price you can't beat them.

  • Buy rechargeable batteries. Coles had the varta ones in a another post for $5 a pack so for $10 you got 4AA and 4AAA. Last a long time in digital cameras and always rechargeable - hence the name.

  • cool find very happy with it

  • Altona still has few left on the shelves. Excellent find. Time to replace all those remote batteries.

  • Thanks, just cleaned out Wyoming store (56 batteries) and got another 20 from West Gosford store. Not not all for me! Still plenty left at that store. BTW both stores were advertising these at the $1 bargain price. I was expecting normal price advertised and a good news outcome at the checkout once they swiped them.

Anyway thanks kimmik - one of the truer bargains in my time as an OzBargainer!

  • Anyone know how much the rechargeables are?

I just bought 20 packs but maybe I should have bought rechargeables since I already own a charger.

I'd have to admit though that the E38/E49 Chargers were iconic beasts.

  • What a ripper bargain thanks for posting it mate!

These are actually cheaper than even the reject shop's mega 60 pack of AA batteries that they currently have on offer! Wish I had of seen this a bit earlier as I just bought a pack of 60 AA eveready general purpose batteries from the reject shop for $12 and I thought their cheap! But I still got some of these when I seen the post because they are just so damn cheap! lol

Reject Shop batteries cost 20c a battery in the cheapest 60 mega pack.
These Coles batteries cost only 12.5c a battery during this sale!

  • just bought a heap from berwick, vic
    thanks for the tip!
    what a great bargain!

  • Just got a bunch today (marked as 4 for $1), but then realised on checkout when it automatically applied the discount and each pack was 49c (and I accidentally bought an odd number so doesn't matter if it's divisible by 4 it seems) so your title is misleading and it is not 4 packs of 2 for $1 but rather 2 packs of 2 or 4 batteries for $1, 25c a battery and not 12.5c, therefore no pozitif fo yoo =P

EDIT: I remove the negative when you fix the description, compared your receipt to mine and exact same thing you payed 25c a battery, 49c per packet…

    • interesting. so they marked it as 4 for 1$, but didn't honour it at the checkout?

be assured that the deal certainly is meant to be 4 packs of two-batteries for $1. there's no number conspiracy here haha.

edit: there's no fixing to be done. i'm sure all of the above people would be happy to contest that the deal is indeed $1 for eight batteries. though it may not be available at all Coles outlets

      • +1

The two stores I purchased from certainly sold me 8 for $1 - They both even stated "4 for $1" meaning "8"
Your title is accurate - my batteries did indeed cost only 12.5c :)

Perhaps some stores didn't honor it. I know recently their clearance sale of LED lights had different prices at different stores.

EDIT: Ah nevermind it was sorted below me, missed that.

  • +1

yeh woopsie, removed the negative, bought too many things, don't normally shop at Coles and did some creative maths in my head hehe, seemed to me like that negative number was a pseudo saving just fyi, but it is an actual subtraction off the batteries' 49c price per packet

EDIT: soz mate, but I can't put positive it seems due to voting and revoking it already, guess tomorrow I will be walking up to people and saying here's some free batteries and get some blank looks, what can I do they were too cheap (just that other stuff on my receipt was too costly :P )…

  • +1

No matter how much I clean the shelves, they keep getting restocked!!!

    • +1

the batteries in my drawers are multiplying like the coat hangers in my wardrobe!

      • I got about 70 all up, with 16 of those for my father. Considering I have a good collection of rechargeables already these are all I'll need for next 10 years for everything else where rechargeables are not suited. Less than $10 for a decade of battery life. I said before it was one of the best deals on Ozbargain, I'd go as far to say it is THE best deal. Good find :)

        • lol thats very nice of you, but be warned that they're rated "best before 2012 July" or something like that.

You could of course, put them in teh fridge, or even the freezer to dramatically lengthen their life. i'm assuming that's what you're doing? Check online first to see if freezer is a good idea. I'm not sure atm.

          Cheers!

    • hehe, yeah I think they are starting to drop off now one store I went to hasn't got any more in at all now and it's been over 3 days I think some stores might have more stock out the back than others.

    • I think your right mate I just popped in at the coles near me for a look and the shelves were packed full of them again and still on sale!

I didn't buy any at all as I have too many allready! But still what an incredible bargain on batteries this is!

  • Just a heads up. There were still four prongs full at Coles Randwick at lunch. I took a fair few of these, but I 'd imagine they still had stock out the back.

  • got some
