  • You can look for a Z400 printer. e.g.

Zebra are bullet proof (and TBH in about 6 weeks, I will have 2 to sell and a Z4M as well).

The labels you can get from any label supplier - but make sure you get standard labels, not custom made ones. Also check your preference between direct and thermal transfer printing.

  • Whats the difference between direct and thermal printing? I saw a lot of labels were "Thermal" labels and i have no idea what that means..

I think we used to have a zebra printer in the past.. not as fancy as the one u linked, looked more like this How much you looking at selling yours for? Is it gonna be worthwhile with shipping? I'm in WA…

    • Thermal transfer uses ribbons (i.e. melts wax on the paper), direct is like a shopping docket.

Direct is less complex, runs less hot (so the head lasts longer), and you only need to buy one consumable. But it's not very durable, heat sensitive, is a special paper, etc. So it depends on what you are printing stuff for.

      • Hmm, i just want something simple to print our freight consignment note barcodes onto, so i can print it onto the adhesive label, tear it off, and stick it onto the pallet. Any opinion on what would be better for my circumstances? Also the pallet can end up in the rain, are either option better for water resistance?

        • Thermal transfer, not direct. Direct will fade in the sun.

If you want it waterproof, you can use mylar labels instead of paper, and they're basically invincible (i.e. think luggage tags in the airport)

Incidentally, my old company just used to use paper labels and cover them with packing tape for the water resistance. It's cheaper that way.

        • Cool, thanks! Now I know what to look for :)

  • Ah this is the one I had before. Any way to get something like this cheaper??

EDIT: Oooh, what about this one from china?? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UPS-ZEBRA-LP2844-TAG-Barcode-Labe…

    • 2844 is good (I have 3), but is it wide enough for a 4" print?

      • Yeah i think the specs said it was wide enough give or take a mm. Do you think this $99 is a good price for it or can it be had cheaper second hand if I be patient and keep looking?

        • That's pretty good. The network ones were about $400 - 500 new if I recall.

BTW, this is the mob I used for my labels / ribbons.

Consumables are expensive if you are only buying a few, but savings scale very quickly… e.g. The cost difference between some custom foil labels for a qty of 500 or 1000 was about $2.
