I've had the same experience at Harvey Norman 84 ORiordan St Alexandria (NSW) from their manager Fadi Clear.

It's illegal for the store you purchased it from to deny you of a remedy for your problem. They must NOT force you to deal with the manufacturer yourself. The store with the name on the top of the receipt is ALWAYS responsible to deal with problems with items they sold you

    http://www.accc.gov.au/business/treating-customers-fairly/co…

The store must NOT mislead consumers about their rights

You must not tell customers they should approach the manufacturer or importer of the good for assistance – the seller must deal with the problem when approached.
You must not suggest that their consumer guarantees are limited to any warranty period – the consumer guarantees apply regardless of any warranties in place.

  • Sorry to hear that you have had a bad experience. Everton Park is the closest store to me. I wouldn't buy anything from Harvey Norman again… I haven't bought from them in years

  • ACCC recently fined HN for faulty refund/return policies - seems thay haven't changed their ways! If a purchase doesn't work or is unfit for purpose you have a right under Australian consumer law to obtain a refund or a replacement FROM THE SELLER. If HN don't want obey the law, I suggest you report them to Consumer Affairs in your state AND also to the ACCC.
    Go hard and good luck!

  • wow. that is illegal!

report the franchise to HN head office.

    • OP, report the franchise to the ACCC, immediately.

As alluded to above, there have been multiple fines in totalling hundreds of thousands of dollars metered out to various Harvey Norman franchises recently for giving false and misleading consumer information of the sort that you received.

If the HN operation as a whole isn't on top of the unconscionable behaviour of their salespeople and individual franchise-owner 'traditions', they deserve no mercy at this point.

  • Bought a tv from HN years ago, broke down four times in the first three months. Would not give me a new tv, kept sending it for repairs. Out of three months had it for less than four weeks. Swore I would never buy anything from HN again and haven't and never will.

  • Lies I've heard @HN

    Its outside of warranty…
NO ITS NOT, IT HAS TO WORK FOR THE REASONABLE LIFE OF THE PRODUCT, NOT JUST 12MONTHS

You need to take that up with the manufacture…
NO YOU DONT, THEY DO. YOU BOUGHT OF THEM, THEY NEED TO RESPOND TO YOUR DEMAND

    Sorry, nothing i can do…
NO, NOTHING YOU WANT TO DO AS ITS UNPROFITABLE. YOU CAN DO THE FOLLOWING

    1. RAISE THE ISSUE HIGHER UP INSTORE, IN COMPNAY (IN WRITTING IS BEST, KEEP A PAPER TRAIL)
    2. ACCC
    3. SMALL CLAIMS (IN THAT ORDER AS ACCC CAN DO NOTHING IF IT BEOFRE THE COURTS)
    4. PICKET THE STORE, TELL EVERYONE. COMPLAIN IN PRINT IN THE PAPERS, TV CURRENT AFFAIRS
  • The Marion Rd store tried the " Here is the address of the manufacturer, you need to deal with them" with me when the power supply on a Sony amp I had bought went feral four years back. I didn't shout, merely slowly raised the level of my voice as I requested the manager be brought to me to confirm it. He suggested it would be quicker to deal with them as there would be transit time added to them taking it in and me receiving it back due to paperwork.

I wasn't quite in the mood to use my time and petrol, and possibly give them an ` he has already accepted that term as part of the contract' out so offered him the choice of repair or refund. It took four weeks, but funnily enough, they did have a methodology for returning it…
