$500 Laptop for home use

Hi guys,

Looking for a laptop for my sister for around $500.

It is for light tasks, primarily internet browsing (online shopping, facebook, youtube, email), watching videos/movies and Photoshop for simple photo editing.

Must have at least 14" screen, though 15" is optimal. Also at this size, does a 720p res screen look good?

Since it will be used most at home, weight and battery life are not huge concerns.

Small SSD is preferred over large storage.

Any suggestions or product recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

  • refurbed Dell Inspiron 15. Check the Dell Outlet. There are heaps of them currently.

i recommend DFO-2645167IP (use CTRL F to search for this) as that's Core i5 for less than $460 but really a Core i3 will be sufficient for a lot of users ($399). Photoshoppers may want the Core i5.

SSD— buy this yourself and self install. You will not find ssd's in mainstream low cost laptops usually.

Inspirons are very hum-ho laptops, but so are many laptops in the $500 range. There's the Toshiba C50 if Inspirons aren't your thing, but the $450 models are using Celerons.

    • Thanks for the response. That is a great price for i5, though my sister isn't really sure about getting a refurbished model. Also I just found this, do you think it is a good deal? Comes to $629 with super70 code.

      • Dell provides 1 year warranty on refurbs.

Reasonably good deal for the HP.

        • Cheers, after looking at both laptops we are leaning more towards spending a bit more and getting the Pavilion.

  • MS Surface with keyboard

    • Needs to be 14"

  • -1

    Would an iPad suffice?

    • No, needs to be 14"
