Snow Gear in SE Melbourne

Hi all,

My wife wants to visit lake mountain and i need to source some cheap snow boots, will only be going for a day (and knowing my family that'd be about 10 minutes int he actual snow) so dont want to pay top dollar . Aldi and Safeway were selling some recently but dont look to still be doing so.

Anyone know in SE Melbourne (Moorabbin way) where I can get some?

  • hmm hubby spotted woolies in our local (eastern melb) area had 50% off snow gear earlier this week.. bargain!!!

  • Think it was Woolies at the Pines (Donvale)

  • Try the opshops in Glenhuntly Rd Elsternwick, saw a fair bit of snow gear at them yesterday.

    Cheers…Sean

  • Woolworths Mentone had some a few days ago. Plus Army Disposal Southland was advertising snow gear rental.

  • AFAIK Ray's outdoor is selling cheap snow boots

  • Thanks, managed to get the shoes from Rays and one pair of pants from my local Safeway.

Just short one set of pants, anywhere cheap in Melbourne CBD??

  • +1

I am a keen skier, just back from a week at Mt Buller. I've skied all over the world from Canada to Japan. When at the snow I wear regular outdoor style shoes. The 'snow boot' things are a con, my recommendation if you are going up for some snowplay and maybe 10 mins on the snow, wear your most waterproof pair of sneakers and save the money! Unless you plan on wading through 5ft of waist deep snow off the beaten track (very doubtful at Lake Mountain) I wouldnt worry about special snow shoes/boots. If you have some of the outdoor style shoes wear them. Little kids seem to go OK in gumboots with some warm socks underneath. In fact gumboots would probably go OK for adults as well.

Worst case keep a dry pair of socks and dry shoes in the boot of the car and change out of the wet ones when your 10 mins is up.

In terms of pants, cheapest over the counter would probably be Aldi if they have any left. When skiing I wear goretex pants that I bought mail order from the US. When walking around generally at the snow I wear regular jeans. If you were a keen Nordic Skier heading to Lake Mountain for the Cross Country trails I would have a different recommendation but my guess is you are going up to throw some snowballs and maybe pull some kids around on a plastic toboggan etc. Woolies ski gear is very basic, wouldnt think it would be much better than jeans to be honest. Aldi stuff isn't much better, Australian snow is very wet and even good stuff soaks through eventually. If you are going to be sitting in the snow or kneeling in the snow you could try the Aldi/Wollies things but you will eventually get wet. If you arent planning on sitting/kneeling in the snow just wear jeans.

If you want proper ski gear the answer is to buy from overseas via mail order. You dont seem like you are into it enough to do that. Aldi seems to be the go for folks that want to give the snow a first try!
