Buying second hand car parts from, eg, wreckers

Anyone know how one can contact wreckers etc., in some 'forum' or place they might look so anyone can fairly easily source and buy spare parts without having to spend a fortune on new or tailor-made ones? I'm sure they must have a place they check somewhere, but I can't find it anywhere. I need an outside left mirror glass for a VW polo 1999 6n1 but it's likely to cost me about $75, and that's only the glass! I'm in Sydney. Any help appreciated.

Depends on the type of car you have. Pick N' Payless in Sydney is quite likely the cheapest place to get parts from a wreckers in Sydney. You pay $2 to get in and you just bring tools and take the part off yourself and go pay for it at the exit. Everything is catalogued and you can check their inventory on their website to see if they have your type of car and then check if that part has been taken already. The prices are extremely good.

Also check ebay. Otherwise call around. There's a lot of cheap wreckers in Sydney, especially in the western suburbs areas. I've actually travelled up there from Canberra on more than one occasion because the difference in the prices is so great that even petrol for a 600km return trip to Sydney still makes it cheaper.

    • wow Pick N' Payless seems awesome!

  • Actually just had a quick look and it looks like they have polo 6n1 mirror glass on ebay from the uk from several sellers for around $25 delivered. Maybe check that it's definitely the right one etc, but that'd be hard to beat.
