Get a Medium Cheese Burger Meal for $4.05 Instead of $5.95 at McDonalds + Some Hints and Tricks

6920

Hey guys, I have been an employee at McDonalds for 5 years so I have decided to share a few deals and hints you can use to save some money and get the best products.

Firstly - A ~$4 medium cheeseburger meal.

The loose change menu deal is currently a $5 medium double beef n bacon meal. Personally, I prefer just normal cheeseburgers. So instead of taking the meat off manually, you can request the burger without bacon and without one piece of meat (We call it 10:1 (ten to one), as it is a tenth of a pound). As you can see in the picture provided, the meal is -90c as adding and removing pieces of meat costs and saves you $$$ respectively.

By asking for a medium double beef and bacon meal WITHOUT 1 piece of meat and without the bacon, you are essentially ordering a cheeseburger (without a pickle, but you can ask for a pickle if you want) with medium fries and a drink, saving yourself nearly $2 if you had ordered a medium cheeseburger meal.

Secondly - Fresh fries

Personally, I hate it when customers do this, but whatever.
If you want fresh fries, you can simply ask for fresh fries, but generally we will be annoyed by your request and just give you the same fries as everyone else.
Instead, ask for either no salt, or only a little bit of salt. We will be forced to wait for the fresh fries to come up to give you the type of fries you asked for.

Thirdly - Fresh Meat

Again, I hate this.
If you want fresh meat on your burgers, ask for the meat unsalted and with Angus seasoning. We automatically salt and pepper all meat we cook. If you ask for Angus seasoning instead of salt and pepper, we have to cook a run of meat specially for you and put the Angus seasoning (Usually only put on Angus meat) on your burger. If you want a Angus burger, we put both salt and pepper AND Angus seasoning on it, so this will still work.

Fourthly - General hints and tips

  • We are supposed to throw out any meat/chicken which is past it's timer (Generally these are 20-30 minutes). On overnight and during non-busy periods we get lazy and just press the timer again instead of throwing it out and cooking fresh product. This is why I never eat the bacon on the double beef n bacons. It is one of the worse culprits for this. Sometimes it will sit in a tray from breakfast (10:30ish) to about 12-1 in the afternoon until we use it all, depending on how much was cooked and left over.

  • The oil in our vats are supposed to be changed every 2 weeks. If you can see the the bottom of the vats and the oil is clear, the oil is very fresh and the chicken is 5x more tastier. If it's black, then it's old and you get run of the mill tasting chicken.

EDIT

Just to be clear - we filter this oil every 12 hours. The chicken is not cooked in dirty oil continuously. Once filtering is done, the oil is pretty much brand new, but not as see-through-ey.

Sorry for the confusion.

  • Be nice to us and we will be nice to you. Common sense. I don't come into your workplace and start swearing my head off because this burger isn't $2 cheaper than the store down the road or that you got the wrong order. Be calm and polite and you will get your problem sorted.

  • Every store which has a drive thru has a certain amount of time to get cars through. My store is 3 minutes. That means as soon as you roll up at the speaker box, we have 3 minutes to get you your food and rolling away. We have a scoreboard in the store showing how many cars each store has done in the past hour, and the percentage of how many cars have met that deadline. So when going through drive thru, please be conscious of this and order quickly and efficiently as you will make us and the people behind you waiting happy.

  • If you have a problem, ask to speak with a manager if it's serious. If you're missing a toy, fries, a drink, just ask a normal crew member and they will get you one.

  • I am 90% certain that a Bacon and Egg add Sausage is cheaper than a Sausage and Egg add Bacon. 10% of me says that they are the same price.

  • Remember that the crew who work at McDonalds are generally teenagers and this is their first job. Don't expect 5 star service from people who aren't tall enough to ride a roller coaster.

Sorry if this belongs in the forums. Enjoy your Meals!

+1 for honesty and creativity on saving a few $$

      • Trying to out-Broden the neg votes? Good luck!!

      • Somehow I agree with Cthtonic. Why annoy the crew? Yes, they're still being paid attending to you, but really? Order bacon cheeseburger then do not put bacon? Rorting it and being picked on by the next customer is not worth it IMO.

How is this any different to the McFlurry deal, apart from having additional tips?

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/131568

      • +66
        • It didn't mention the McFlurry deal
        • It's a completely different deal
        • +26

What Mark-F means is - the McFlurry deal was posted on "Deals"; therefore this classifies as a "Deal" :)

        • +9

          What Oipjo said..

        • +6

          @Mark-F:

Oh, sorry! Took it out of context.

  • +3

Another one is a triple cheeseburger w/ bacon meal for cheaper.

Instead of ordering a standard triple cheeseburger meal ( with bacon I think this would usually cost about $9.50+), order the double beef and bacon meal ($6), then a separate cheese BBQ burger ($2, ask for tomato sauce instead of bbq), and then you have a triple cheese burger w/ bacon mean for $8.

    • +17

Or you could order 3 BBQ Cheeseburgers with ketchup instead of BBQ Sauce for $6 and combine then for a triple cheeseburger and add a piece of bacon for either 50c or $1 I can't remember.

You'll have 3 pieces of meat and 6 pieces of cheese, onion and 3 buns for $6.50 or $7.

      • +16

true, but no fries and coke. It is a sin to go to maccas and not get fries and/or coke.

        • +16

          You got me there.

          You win this round!

        • +3

          @SnowDragon:

need to make sure its a diet coke to keep it healthy ;)

        • +2

          It's ok I've got this.

          Double Beef n Bacon Meal - $5
Cheesey BBQ Burger w/o BBQ sauce- $2

          You will have
          3 pieces of cheese
          3 pieces of meat (10:1)
          Mustard
          Ketchup
          Small onions
          Bacon

Which is everything a triple cheeseburger has except a pickle.

Plus you'll get your drink and fries.

So you'll get your med triple cheeseburger meal for $2-3 less.

        • @SnowDragon: Stores here in Qld have cheeseburgers for $1.50 with any value meal purchase.

  • +18

    You have created a monster!!

upvote for staying at maccas for 5 years good effort!

  • +7

Also, there is the cheap-ass mcflurry hack. Order soft serves in cups instead of cone, and add a topping (in total 80c). You can order about 5 of these for the cost of a standard mcflurry. 3 of these is plenty ($2.40).

    • +17

I used to order a soft-serve in a cup with MnMs for only $80c.

These have been posts on OZB before so I didn't bother.

      Thanks anyway!

  • +1

By the logic expressed on the Double Beef & Bacon without Double or Bacon, one could obtain a cheap Margarita pizza by ordering a Hawaiian pizza without ham and pineapple?

    +1 for creativity for sure!

    • +4

Most pizza places prices margaritas lower than Hawaiians. And if not-they probably wont take money off for changing it.

      • +3

        Exactly, where is the basil?

    • +3

You can quite often avoid a surcharge on "chicken or seafood pizzas" ordered online by ordering a different pizza and subbing out the beef for chicken. Or the capsicum for chicken. Or everything. Just sub out everything for chicken, actually, it's clearly the best deal.

    • +72

You have to understand that we are making 100s of burgers an hour.

Half the time someone on the production line isn't paying attention and may put a pickle on the burger you ordered without pickles.

Yes, we do get things wrong, for that we apologize. But there's no need to start a fight over it.

        • +38

.. or you can just stop eating at maccas .
if you want better service, go somewhere else and pay for it.

        • +128

Amar can you stop posting? I am running out of my daily negs

        • +2

Amar89 either you're the only human in existence to be perfect and never make a mistake, or your so insecure you need to belittle others to make yourself feel better. Which seems more likely…

        • +1

Why are you taking it out of OP? It's not like he did anything wrong to you. If you're frustrated with McDonald's employees in general then say that, don't target OP.

        • +1

Not everyone is a clear and good a communicator as you (believe you are). many go um, er, and change their mind midstream. The person prior to you may have been that person, and that might cause stress to the person serving, which might then be reflected to you as incompetence, when it's a stressed out kid.

Kids have less tolerance to stress than grown-ups…..usually. We the grown ups should be wiser, and able to show stress-handling techniques.

But I'd rather deal with a patient diplomatic poor communicator, and a rude impatient arrogant, stressful…..can you see what I'm trying to say, Amar89?

        • +3

          @daveted:
Realistically, by today's maturity levels, and assuming that the 89 in his name represents his birth year, as a 25yo male, he is still very much a kid himslef… mentally!!!

        • +3

          @Amar89

          Wow so fussy over maccas??

I can only imagine how you would react at a fine dining establishment if something goes wrong?

        • +1

Hey Amar, remember these are just kids working at these fast food outlets. They get paid minimum wage (for kids, which can be lower than $10 an hour), and the point of going to these joints isn't to get good quality service - it's to get your food and go.

Most jobs that are primarily staffed with kids are the same. You're not visiting a Michelin Star restaurant or some other fancy establishment - you can't expect the same level of service at Maccas as you do in Quay or Momofuku.

        • +5

First deal I've ever used my 5 daily negative comment votes in. And I've been on ozbargain for years

        • +4

Amar, you're not you when you're hungry.

        • -2

Amar why don't you go to somewhere like Hilton and order your idiot burger? Then you have your right to complain. People like you should be banned in Ozbargain this world.

      • +6

Stuffing up a special request when you are flat out with a Nazi floor manager barking at you I can understand.

Stuffing up orders containing only standard items that are printed on a computer screen in front of you so often people are forced to go through the bag(s) at the counter to make sure the order is correct - not so much.

        /end1stworldproblemsrant/

    • +7

Yeah, my local can't get a normal order right, they'd stuff up these loopholes for sure and I'd end up with a box of cookies.

    • Was it SnowDragon that served you?

      • +14

        I work in the kitchen.

Too ugly for the counter probably.

        • +10

you have a pretty cool attitude though.

        • +1

          @kwaker:

          I'm a cool cat, don't worry about that ;)

    • +13

Hey Amar89, where can we buy one of the high horses from that you ride around on.

    • wow. makes me wonder how precious some parts of society has become…

i thought Australians are supposed to be laid back and easy going… not some dummy spit when they get an order wrong at maccas… or are you some foreigner?

    • Thanks for the insight William Douche Foster.

  • -6

Which store should I not be buying bacon at?

Frankly I am disgusted that you leave cooked food in warmers for hours. This massively increases the ability for foodborne pathogens to breed, and can kill people.

    • +11

It happens with all our products.

Instead of throwing out all the product we have up every 20 minutes, it stays in for another round so we're not running out of it.

The only time we do throw products out is when head office is inspecting the stores and making sure everything is done by the book.

My store cuts corners, and I can easily say that every other store does the same.

      • +9

Don't stress, I can guarantee he wouldn't throw it out within 20 minutes at home either!!!

      • +7

True story, breakfast bacon soon became Lunch Leather when I worked at Macca's, we used to add water to the muffin UHT trays, to keep them bouncy fresh, Chicken was just bad luck, and would last until it turned into a frisbee, most stores skimp on labour, leaving the back area short on staff, while the manager sits in the office, reading their emails.

God I'm glad I left, 3 years of Macca's was enough for me.

    • +8

do you prefer the truth or the dressed up one? either way, i applaud OP for pointing this out.

      • I appreciate that OP has been open and honest about their workings. +1 to you. However, it further confirms my reasons not to go to McD's.
        Local Fish&Chip shop burger FTW!

        • +6

If you think your local fish n chip shop is as diligent with the oil as maccas you'd probably be disappointed.

        • +1

No way a local fish and chip joint would even bother to filter the oil every 12 hours …

  • +4

and dont go through drive thru if ordering any of these hacks - it will result in delays for all involved ;)

    • I went through another stores drive thru when I discovered the medium double cheeseburger one.

I asked for the burger without 10:1 and confused the order-taker because you don't expect people to know what the meat is called. I had to repeat my order again for her to understand.

      • +10

Wow, you still eat maccas in your real life? I thought you'd be really bored after staring and smelling and eating these foods during work for 5 years.

        • At 10.30 pm at night, perhaps there is little choice! :)

        • +1

Well it's cheap and I'm a uni student.

  • +1

Yeah it is surprising what you get when you just ask nicely, whenever i order any KFC chicken I ask for large pieces (which are generally thighs and breast) or no wings and drumsticks and essentially increasing the value of what I would buy. However this sometimes doesn't work so well with the "Streetwise" options as they are designed to give majority small pieces for the price reduction.

  • come on now….

  • +12

The fact that I read this… I think I have too much time on my hands…

  • +6

Another couple tricks I recently learned—It's cheaper to buy 2 packs of 10 McBites at $2 per pack rather than I think around $5 for 20 McBites. Also, order two small fries instead of a large—you'll save $1.50 and it's the same quantity of fries, if not a little more.

Also for people ordering the cheap sundaes or McFlurries, when you're ordering your meal, ask for a free cup of water, drink it all while you're eating, and when you go to order separate cones in lids and your topping, you can transfer everything into the drinking cup. I do this to my local McDonalds because they refuse to put the soft serve serves into one cup for me because they whine I'm trying to circumvent the system and it's not allowed.

    • Last time I tried getting a soft serve in a lid (at Melbourne Central) they said they weren't allowed to do that any more :(

    • +1

With the fries, it depends a bit on who's serving them, but a large fries is actually approximately 3 small fries. Also, as most people guessed, they "whine" about the cones in a cup because you are trying to circumvent the system.

The managers hear about this stuff the same as you do and they try to make sure their crew are doing it right. The reality is that soft serves aren't worth their cost anyway. Their labour cost alone is upwards of 15 cents, and there are still various other costs to factor in as well (stock, equipement maintenance, etc). The loss is sustainable when it comes to soft serves (in part since they're so core to the menu), but it's hard to justify selling McFlurries and Sundaes at an equivalent price, especially when they're a more significant food item. (I was a manager until I about a year and a half ago)

      • +6

a large fries is actually approximately 3 small fries

Not according to the nutritional info. Small = 1,070kJ, Large = 1,900kJ
        2 small ~ 1 large

        https://mcdonalds.com.au/menu/fries

    • how do you get soft serve in a lid, what kind of lid, cup lid, wouldn't that make a mess?

      • usually a sundae cup lid

  • +4

kudos to you for surviving at Maccas for 5 years! hope they've promoted you to store manager! (if you choose to be one) :)

    • +30

I'm a crew trainer at the moment and I basically run the joint.

I've been there longer than most of the managers so I tell them what to do.

      Thanks for the encouragement.

      • +3

I hope you're not teaching your new crew members to just hit reset on those timers rather than refresh the meat products in the warmer! Tsk tsk :P

Oh yeah, a tip I have is to order 3 x small fries instead of 1 x large. You get more delicious kilojoules for your dollars that way. Enough to cover off not filling the little bags they use for small fries. I butted that out by looking at the kj's per serve - haven't verified by weighing each…

      • +2

I hope you're teaching them that ignoring franchise practices is not a good idea, that using old or "dirty" oil increases the carcinogenic risk, and that reheating chicken is also risky.

        • +7

its not really chicken, its ok…

  • +1

big plus from me. I never know what's currently on the loose change menu because they don't advertise it in my local store. I hope they don't fire you for being so honest.

    • +18

They'll have to find me first haha.

      • +10

Finding you won't be too difficult. There won't be too many people at MCDNLD working in a kitchen for 5yrs and working as a crew trainer at the moment. Honestly I don't want you in trouble, but if all that is true, then edit all your posts and hide your tracks before someone from corporate office jump on this post

        • +3

Head office doesn't know (or care) enough about individual stores to try and track down SnowDragon - if they even could in the first place. There might not be many 5 year kitchen crew trainers, but there's definitely more than one, and that's all that really matters.

    • +4

Apart from teaching you to optimise the orders in some creative ways, the tips are encouraging you to eat at maccas, so I doubt Snow Dragon will be fired for this :)

  • Thanks OP!

Last month I drove through from local Mcdonald to buy a sausage & egg muffin meal for breakfast.

Driving to work and noticed in the bag there were 2 hash browns but in my muffin, there is only cheese, no sausage or egg. But could not bothered to drive back.

In this case, do you think the staff put 2 hash browns in bag in purpose because when he picks up the muffin, he can surely tell it is much lighter than normal. But he might just could not care less

    Does this happen quite often?

    • +1

They must have given you an English Muffin instead of the S&E. The kitchen person probably wrapped it wrong.

Don't know why they'd give you the 2 hash browns. My guess is that someone ordered 2 hashies and an english muffin and you got their order. Was there butter or jam in the bag as well?

      • Nope, just missing the sausage and egg in muffin, but having one extra hash brown.

        • maybe vegetarian ordered it without the good stuff .. hehehe

      • what is in a mc english muffin by the way? just cheese?

        • Butter, and you can get Jam/Vegemite.

    • That happened to me the other morning too, when I ordered a S&E value meal.
Order was fine…but I got two hashies :)
Was my win for the day…woohoo!

  • +2

    Hey Op,

Every time I order a sausage mcmuffin, they enter a sausage and egg mcmuffin and then look me a strange when I correct them.
Is it that rare an order?

    • +1

No. We get them all the time.

Not sure why they'd put in a sausage and egg instead of a plain sausage.
