$489 50" Kogan TV Preorder @ Kogan [Ships 12/08/2014] + Shipping (Approx $37)

90

Hi all,

Saw this deal for a 50" Kogan TV and actually think this is a deal for those in the market for a large, no frills TV at a decent price.

Notable points are the VESA mount, USB, AUO panel (never heard of them before), 170° view angle, play back files (MKV, MP4, H.264, MPEG2, MPEG4, JPEG, PNG, BMP, MP3, WMA, MPG), 3x HDMI (doesn't say which version) and <100W average power consumption.

Also has PVR capability to record on USB.

It seems shipping varies heavily. Damn those Victorians!

Nice price for a big panel - AUO are a pretty serious player

AUO are a serious player, however the panel is only so good as the electronics inside the TV driving it- this is where most cheaper TV's fall down eg- input lag, image tearing in moving images etc etc. Having not tried this model I can't comment specifically, but going on most of the cheaper sets I've seen I would personally spend extra on a known set, and know what I'm getting.

A big telly is great, but not if the picture is rubbish.

  • Sorry for posting the wrong TV size :( If anyone has any Kogan TV's, got any feedback before any triggers are pulled?

    • I think Kogan use different manufacturer for their panel, Samsung, LG and now AUO.

I have a 42" LED LCD (LG panel, pre-order (early 2012).. cost about $330 or so - was abnormally cheap).

      The good:
      - Panel is lovely - IMO just as good as a LG branded one (though out of the box it was a bit washed out, not hard to adjust)
      - Cost was not even in the ballpark of competitors at the time (and is still pretty good now, 2 years later)
      - Digital tuner, PVR, USB playback etc all works OK
      - Kogan support have looked after me well (see below)

      The Bad:
      - It was a pre-order, and the delivery date was delayed further. Ended up coming a few weeks late. I didn't really NEED it so this didn't bother me too much.
      - First one was DOA - appeared to have the wrong firmware flashed (showed Konka splash screen then nothing else). Kogan sent me another without too much drama.
      - 'Died' at about 18 months - no picture, but sound etc worked OK. Was fixed out of warranty free. 1 Day turnaround once they received it, so must have been a common/easy fix.
      - Seems to sometimes forget which input it was last on, and choose another on startup. Not a big issue but bad for wife-approval-factor.
      - Channel changing isn't lightning fast and the EPG is kind of ordinary (probably improved by now)
      - Sound could be better (but I was planning to use a receiver etc regardless). Most LCD tvs have pretty poor sound.

IMO - if you just want a basic 'panel' to display the output of your other stuff, they're fine. They can be a bit 'rough around the edges'.

It's worth considering something like a Soniq instead eg https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-televisio…
Warranty claims with JB are easier than couriering back and forward to Kogan & you can see it in the flesh before buying. It is only $10 more and 2" smaller.
Local warranty means you won't have a 50" box in your garden shed 'just in case' either!

  • Very tempting…

  • Very good price.
Wondering about the quality of the TV? Any comment?

    • The last few Kogan sets I've seen have been very nice for the money; the big question is with the warranty, Kogan never used to have a good name for after sales backup, I'd like to hear from those with experience if this aspect has improved recently?

    • Sounds like the JB soniq 48" $499
except no waiting and easy returns

So according to wikipedia AUO makes TFT-LCD panels, is that a good thing?

I only ask because when I look at PC monitors basically there is TN, VA, IPS and I realise I'm probably off track but are they worth it?

    • They make the same panel types as the likes of LG and Samsung. With a TV this big, it'll probably be an MVA panel (or some kind of IPS-ish technology).

If this is anything like the DSE 55" TV I bought last month (which had the same 160/170 degree viewing angle), it will be horrible to look at, very grey blacks.

  • My knowledge of TVs isn't amazing so could someone tell me if this could handle PS3 gameplay?

    • +1

As long as the TV has HDMI, it should be capable.

    • You'll need an actual PS3 console for PS3 gameplay… :-P

    • Yes, it'll handle it fine. Has 3 HDMI ports.
