Gift for someone having a baby?

Hi all.

I'm looking for ideas re: a good gift for my psychologist who is having a baby boy soon. Ideally for less than $50. Based on the fact that she isn't really meant to accept gifts from clients, I can't just outright ask her what she'd like.

So… people who have had children! Did/do you prefer practical gifts or have you also found value in gifts like soft toys etc (or do they just end up creating clutter and are ignored by the child?)?

Happy to hear any and all ideas you have :)

I'm naturally inclined to give something practical and meaningful, like educational toys for the child, but that might be jumping a bit too far for a newborn haha. Unless you can point to toys that you've found your very young kids to enjoy…

Thanks!

Nappies, Huggies brand, shitloads of them (well, $50 will get you ~2 boxes)…trust me, they will love you to death! (metaphorically, of course) :)

Some people might not want to use disposables though.

You can often buy little gift boxes that includes a onesie, hat and bootsies or some other combination of clothes. Eg. http://www.purebaby.com.au/shop/gifts-d6?productGenderId=2

Yeah, every prospective new parent says that…until they actually have a kid!

IME, modern disposables are far better from a comfort, dryness & rash prevention POV…I've used both across the course of literally decades, and would never go back to cloth purely for the baby's sake!!!

        • Ah, I've only known two babies and one is on cloth and one is on composatables.

        • Don't worry, we all start out with the best of intentions with this sort of stuff; unfortunately, reality has a way of kicking the best laid plans square in the nuts! :)

Child car seats may be a great idea. holding-in-arms cannot protect baby in car.human strength is not enough against the impacts.

Easy. Just buy them food. No rule says you have to buy a gift specifically for the baby. Get a basket of fresh fruit, a bottle of wine, a congratulations card, maybe a bottle of lanolin and other postpartum skin care for the mama.

If they are an Asian family, then gift giving is even easier. Buy an Ang Pow and give a red packet gift.

Wine is not good for new mothers who breastfeed

remember to write a card and introduce her to Ozbargain, the gift that keeps on giving :)

  • Sounds ultra practical but the best thing we have having had 3 babies now is the Vicks Vaporizer machine. They're about $50.
Nothing better for sick babies/kids with snotty noses than putting this on overnight. Natural, safe and effective.
I wish we had of got one sooner.

  • problem with buying toys, clothes or electrical items is they might already have purchased or prefer a particular brand

even nappies, wipes or formula, they might not be the ones they like or want

    vouchers!

  • Purely speaking from my own experience if your a little bit crafty you can make one of those nappy cake things, you could google it/pinterest and have a look at a few examples. Huggies nappies are the best for newborns so I would use those, include bibs, facewashers, nappy rash cream, bonjela, etc. The other things my children have really enjoyed are wooden toy mobile, any wooden educational toy, a cute nightlight.

  • A selection of real cotton nappies in really bright colours (red yellow green blue) + polypropelyne liners that wick the wee away from the sign and into the nappy. Great for outings and no nappy rash, especially Summer evenings.

NO SOFT TOYS. Seriously. I don't care how cute they seem. They breed. Babies just aren't that interested in them either.

This was my surprise favourite thing for my babies: http://www.productreview.com.au/p/infantino-changing-table-f…
Mesmerises them on the change table. Never would have picked it, but I LOVE THIS THING…hahahaha…am not sure if it's sold anymore.

I personally would steer away from things like nappies, bottles, creams etc as they are personal preference. I breastfeed and use chemical free nappies so all those kinds of gifts have just been passed on to friends.

I'd suggest going into a baby shop and just buying something ridiculously cute (and hopefully a little practical).

Otherwise a pack of muslins with a gorgeous design on them would definitely be used and appreciated - I couldn't justify buying the cute, expensive ones so had to hope I'd get given some.

Would be inclined to agree. My kid has only started being interested in one soft toy and she is now almost 22 months.

  • Wish Gift card…

  • One thing that every parent needs is a lot of wiping up cloths for all sorts of spills and other messy events. And surprisingly, standard old fashioned large square cotton nappies work really well. You can use them as drop sheets under and around the baby, oversized bibs, towels and even for mopping up the floor. A few of those nappies with a big box of nappisan and also a pair of ear plugs ;-)

Simple… Sophie the giraffe. EVERY parent ends up with one. Its not a cuddly toy, it's useful, its cheap, and its cool!

  • Just pick a cute little outfit for a boy get size 000 or even better 00 or 0, everyone tends to give size 0000 and size 000 and when they get to 3 months old you tend to run out of baby clothes. Add some nice body lotions for mum or baby or other baby toiletries.

Best gift we got for our baby was an infrared thermometer

Having said that we always give expectant mothers the gift and not the baby because everyone else including the mother showers the baby in gifts…
    - A massage voucher is always welcome
    - skin pamper pack…

    Gifts for the mum
