It's not a bad piece of equipment. However two things you need to be careful of. First, it won't charge the things that need 2.0 A e.g. the iPad air. Second if you plan to use this for your phones, it charges them and then turns off to conserve power. However given that the charging ends at 2 am, by the tIME you get up, your phone will be down to 90%… YMMV

    • Thanks for the info…
      I thought i'd give it a shot
but when you said the charging ends at 2am, why bother

    • The product can be used to charge Smartphone or low powered devices not tablet unfortunately.

I love the concept of cutting off power when the devices are fully charged.

But I would only want to pay that much only if it's a wireless charging pad.

    • +1

Generic Qi wireless charging pads are down to around $11 including freight. Brand name charging pads eg Samsung are 4 to 5 times as much.

Add a Qi adapter to a Samsung S5 and you are all set. (Adapters need to be installed inside the phone adjacent to the battery terminals for the Samsung Galaxy 5 - the qi adapter for an Apple 5s is actually a case in which the bottom part connects to the phone - the generic brand is around $14. There is another version for Apple 5S in which the qi charging adapter sits on the back of the phone and connects to the charging terminal - looks terrible.

  • It's not a bad price for what you get. Sure, you can get AC to USB adaptors for cheap on eBay, but with all the recent news about them being unsafe, this looks okay for $25.

that crap in the news is just $hit. simple fact. everything is made in china. $hit happens… could happen to anything…. manufacturers recall cars for cryin out loud… so a small cable. who gives a $hit… aussie or ebay chinese…. someones bound to die here n there

    • well its really about QC - for cheap $1-2 chargers I would expect 1/100 to fail but for genuine products - QC should make that at least 1/1000.

The case with the woman dying was the first ever reported in australia and I woudnt be surprised if the charger was not in tip top shape anyways. Plus who uses their phone while plugged in while also using their laptop plugged in with earphones in to create a perfect circuit?

      No its not.

The fact she died, is the problem, it is not a simple matter of it no longer working type fault. The reason for the regulations and standards that items must meet is not to prevent the item failing to operate, but to stop it killing people.

Where its made is not the question. Who controls the quality and design minimum standards IS.

When you import somethign that meets standards, its as good as anything safety wise as an item bought from say Officeworks. But when you just buy cheap, often its not the same even if it looks the same. The internal parts, and design layout are often flawed, sometimes fatally.

standards or not there's something else to that sad story, i don't believe it's just the usb charger at fault, 1) many people have laptops and smartphones yet this is the first reported case making it very rare/unusual, 2) not an electrician but the story is that she was holding the plugged in laptop in one hand and plugged in phone in the other, but somehow she was touching an earthed/uninsulated part of laptop and phone both at same time to complete circuit?? all mains powered devices are insulated from mains voltages unless they were both faulty/tampered with, although sometimes if i touch/stroke my laptop's metal lid while plugged in and i'm not wearing shoes i can feel a slight tingling sensation in my finger

          Fraid not.
Pull one of the cheapies to bits and you'll soon see.
Dodgy in every way. Dodgy soldering, dodgy components, comedy board material. These things are only drip of solder away from a fire or going 240v live on the outputs.
          So there's one recorded death.
          How many wrecked devices?
          How many fires?
These $2 chargers are straight-up dangerous.

You're right, sh*t happens, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't take safety precautions. Why do you think regulations exist? It's to ensure that whatever products are released onto the market at least follow certain safety precautions, e.g. sufficient insulation, particular circuit design…etc.

If you don't give a sh*t, then that's good for you, you can use unsafe products, but there are people out there who recognise the dangers these products can have and who wish to use safer products.

  • "Device is not included."
I quickly scroll down the descriptions and hit that line. LOL

    • "Devices" referred to smartphone/blackberry/mp3 player that is pictured - not included in the sale.

  • Order placed, cheers. Do you have a rough delivery time (located in Melbourne).

    • Hopefully 3-4 business days. Your order will be dispatch on Monday. Thank you.

  • This was available from COTD sometime a year ago which I posted on here. And I'm still using mine. It doesn't matter if I plug in my phone before I go to bed then it finishes at midnight because a 10% decrease in battery life by the time it's morning isn't really bad at all.

    • I suppose you could get one of those $6 switch timers from KMart and have it power on at 4AM or whatever works with your phone, so its near 100% when you are up.

  • The low amps makings charging painfully slow. I brought an Anker usb from Amazon instead. Had to use a shipping forwarded to bring it in but it does everything. Ipad mini while charging a note 2 and note 3 all at once.

    • Interested in the Anker - can you advise which one?

I use mine to charge my commuting bike light. Put it on when I get home, when it's finished charging it turns off and no wasted energy. Because it's a light and it charges whilst off, I don't get problems above with it stopping charging and then losing charge because it's still on, like the smartphones.
