A wifi dongle from ebay can be picked up for a couple of dollars. This would connect to and use his friends internet.
A wireless dongle that would take a sim card and therefore use his own data seem to cost around $15-$20 on ebay. You would need to get a sim card seperately. Yatango do a free months trial with 1GB of data included.
You can set everything to PAYG so there's no ongoing payments, or just cancel it online when you don't need it anymore.
The Xbox 360 is the one that requires the proprietary MS Wifi dongle. The new gen Xbox One already has Wifi N built in.
