Suggest Dual Sim Android?

Hey, thought I'd ask the audience as I'm looking for a new phone. Needs to be dual sim as I'm sick of carting work + personal phone around.

My daily phones right now are SGS4 and an old Motorola Defy+, but as I usually run CM instead of stock, branded software/layout doesn't concern me. Currently on Optus/Vodafone but possible switch to Telstra/Vodafone on the cards.

Have been looking at the Moto G, but the lack of SD card slot made me pause (don't know why, don't run masses of apps and all photos/videos are deleted once on dropbox.) I'd have bought the 4G version in a heartbeat if it was dual sim, although 4G service isn't required.

Basically, what's your thoughts on best bang-for-buck dual sim out there?
Exceptional bargains expected of course!

Cheers

    • If you don't mind the bit of hassle, the Moto G supports USB OTG, not a bad way to store media, no good for big apps though.

    • This is ozbargain, the Moto G is to 3G mobiles as the eneloop is to batteries!

  • ASUS Zenfone 5 /6. According to people who have bought it, have noted it's of good build quality and runs surprisingly fast (for a dual core device).

SD card capable but battery is not swappable.

    • Hadn't seen these phones before. My phones aren't full of high demand apps so dual core shouldn't be too much of a concern. Aside from that, the specs look good and it's on my shortlist!

  • If you want to try chinese phoone, try UMI CROSS NFC phone, dual sim, quad core, 6.44inch, 4100mah. I bought it and happy so far.

As an alternative; I leave my second phone at home with call forwarding on and an app that forwards text messages. Call forwarding comes up with the original person trying to dial you's number but you pay for the call between your 2 phones.

Something to keep in mind is that, AFAIK, there still isn't a dual SIM mobile which can do 3G on both SIMs at the same time. ie; At best, it's 3G (and 2G) on one SIM, but only 2G on the other. You can usually soft-switch the capability between SIMs, but that still doesn't help if you need the best possible coverage on both SIMs at the same time.

3G-wise, look for something that can do 3G850, 3G900 and 3G2100. Almost all do 3G2100, but some only do 3G850 OR 3G900, not both.

My main dual SIM mobile is a Samsung Galaxy S Duos (3G850 version). When I bought it, there was nothing at the time that had 3G850 AND 3G900. If I had to replace it today, I'd probably buy a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Duos, which does have all those 3G bands.

Another consideration is whether or not you need "dual active", or if "dual standby" will suffice. With the latter, one SIM is effectively off the air for calls, if you're on a call on the other SIM. That's how it is with my S Duos, but for what I use it for, I can live with it.

I feel your pain about carrying two mobiles around; I now carry two or three, including the dual SIM!

  • The Redmi Note has relatively good specs for its price, if your talking bang for buck with dual sim and don't mind imports:

Else I have no suggestions as other phones locally available have the trend of being too low spec.

  • MOTO E/MOTO G

  • Redmi Note looks good but cannot be used on NextG
As soon as a half decent LTE capable dual sim phone comes out I want to buy one.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that is sick to death of carrying two phones around.
