Advice on what plan to get (under $20 p/mth with more data)

Hi guys,

I'm currently looking for a mobile plan (month to month, post paid preferably) under $20 per month with a decent amount of data (around 1GB).

I was previously on Vodafone's $30 plan with a 50% discount but that has now ended, so I'm looking for something with less calls but more data.

Vaya's $18 per month plan seems like a good option, so something similar to them would be great.

(4G isn't necessary as my phone doesn't support it.)

Thanks!

Virgin has a bonus 1gb data at the moment I think, the $20 plan will have 1.2gb, check their website.

We don't make that many calls, so we've gone with the 10GB for $99 data pack from Amaysim which lasts 365 days - so nearly a 1GB per month if you stretch it, or just renew sooner. Then on top of that we signed up with telecube, using their voip whirlpool plan (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2236147) for cheap phone calls - with the option of calls through Amaysim as a backup if VOIP is down.
It's not quite as straight forward as signing up to a plan - and you're not getting the bonus of a certain value of calls included - but it works for us. Averages out to about $10 per month for us.

    • Isn't telechoice $20 sim only plan cost same and give the same value calls and data 1GB a month without extra hassle.

      • Averages to about $10 per month for us including calls - sometimes a but more or less. Thats based on 1 or 2 calls every few days. Not that much extra hassle once it's all set up - the phone app is pretty good - stores all your contacts etc.

  • I too am with vodafail out of contract for so long. Planning to move out. Bought LG G2 and waiting for delivery. Thinking to move to $20 telechoice plan. Couldn't find any better plan for this low cost.

  • TC use this link & get a shorter 12month contract

Then either boost or aldimobile, or contract sim only Optus $45/$60 UNLIMITED 2gb/5gb + share data for a one off $5 sim bolton

I would advise to avoid the big players - Telstra, Optus and Vodafone and go through one of their resellers.
These are usually on the optus or telstra networks. Use a telstra reseller if you need country access or Tasmania, otherwise optus resellers are fine. They don't spend all the money on advertising so have lower overheads which means lower rates and they rely on word of mouth mainly. Odds are you won't have heard of any of them.

The best I've found are $9.90 1GB amaysim on the optus network. It's prepaid so you can increase it for a month if needed. 29.90 gets you 2.5GB per month.
(I'm on their unlimited call plan 4GB of data, unlimited oz calls (mobile included) and texts for $39.90 per 30 days. Works well when travelling using the tether function on my iphone)

Telstra reseller aldimobile.com.au gives you calls plus texts plus 1GB of data for $30 per 30 days.
Or you can pay $15 for 365 days of line rental then pay $30 for 3GB of data. Better option if it's just the data you need and would prefer more data.
Otherwise on Telstra, for data only Boost give 1GB for $20 www.boost.com.au

Generally avoid anything where you pay $30 for 700 dollars of value or similar. They are good value unless you exceed it, then the call cost is astronimical. TPG and others do this and can be good value if you use just the credit, otherwise you pay 2.38 per call on their '$19 plan with $500 of value'. Unless you really want to check your bill every day to see your credit, or will never exceed it, best avoided.

    • Worth noting that the Telstra resellers don't offer 4G. Also if you're on prepaid, the astronomical call costs don't matter much as you just recharge your $30 and get another $700 value.

Optus's resellers don't either, and the person mentioned their phone doesn't support it anyway.

        • virgin (which is on optus) does.
