Best 1TB External HDD? Which One to Get?

I'm looking for a 1TB External HDD (plug and play). I've read enough reviews to go for the SATA (as they said its faster transfer rate?). I'm not IT savvy.

So far I found that www.msy.com.au have the best price at $115+$30 (casing) = $145 for their Western Digital and Seagage 1TB HDD (I live close to their branch so no delivery fees).

Is there any better deals out there? I've checked all the postings here but yet to find one cheaper than this, as mostly need to include postage fees. I have not heard of Astone, so I am not going for generic brands, but more popular brands like WD and SG. Is LG any good?

Thanks for anyone who take the time to reply this post!

  • Astone are a case manufacturer.. inside an Astone case will be a WD, Seagate, Hitachi, Samsung or Maxtor Drive.
    Similarly LG..
There are reasonably regular Hard Drive deals posted here..(like today's $99 1TB Hitachi) so if you can afford to wait, keep checking in for a bargain..

    • Thanks, now I know Astone is a case manufacturer!

Scubacoles has good advice. Note that you ask for 'best' so not necessarily 'cheapest' external HDD.
If you had to get it today I'd do it this way.
WD 10EADS HDD for $115 + Cooler Master XPort Case for $30.99 + $11 flat fee delivery = $156.99 total.

That way you get brand name hard drive (which is virtually silent) as well as brand name case with respective warranties on both. 9289.com.au have flat fee delivery so you don't get charged extra for ordering the two together. This is good as the external 3.5" case comes with a power supply and hence weights a fair bit.

When you mention 'SATA' hard drive, do you mean the actual hard drive or do you mean 'e-sata' connection for the external hard drive case? The Cooler Master External HDD cases are great but they can not compete on price with an e-sata Astone unit.

    • Thanks, I do not know what 'SATA' or 'e-SATA' means. Is it different or same?

I think the main concern is also the rate of data transfer to and fro the internal HDD and external HDD. Which term do I look for, for a good rate of transfer (so that I do not wait hours to transfer large files in one click)?

SATA refers to 'Serial ATA' which is the standard connector for hard drives these days. Any standard external case you buy will have an internal SATA connector to attach the drive.

E-SATA is a method of connecting an external drive (just like USB) except at considerably faster speeds. The thing with E-SATA is though you need to make sure that your motherboard supports it and that you have a suitable external bracket. Most external cases that have E-SATA also have USB however they tend to cost more than USB only cases.

For best compatibility USB is good enough, for absolute maximum speed a case that supports E-SATA is the way to go.
