Also, 2 stops. One @ Brunei, another @ Dubai

I flew with brunei a year ago and actually preferred 2 stop overs, as the legs are broken up into 8/8/7 hour stages.. Brunei & dubai stops are about a 2 hour wait while the plane refuels and picks up new passengers.. only real problem was that we had no local currency for either stop so had to wait to get back on board to get a drink (other than drinking water at the terminal)..

      • you can pre-get Dubai currency from your local (bank) or somewhere similar

but you can only get Brunei currency in the country itself (and there's one place in the airport)
not that you'll need a lot of it though, for an "international" airport, the selections for food/drink are very limited (about 1 cafe, 1 coffee shop, and 1 convenience store - from 2011 memory)
also note that any drink you do get (like a can of coke from the shop) WILL be taken off you when you check your baggage through (unless you skull it right there)

Brunei accepts Singaporean currency at 1:1. So you can pick up some SGD in australia and use it.

      • When I stopped in Dubai, you could pay in pounds and get the change back in Dubai currency.

    • Thanks! just updated the deal URL

Brunei has just adopted a hard line Sharia law stance that applies to everyone including non-Muslims.
Not a good place to be gay or living with your girlfriend but not married. Its in the Age today. The usual hardline dark ages caveman BS. Stonings, amputations whipping.
    Fun place.

    • You're not leaving the international zone of the airport…

      • +2

True, and not that it would worry me (i've been to worse places), but you always run a risk when entering a territory like this that is run by a dictatorship!!!
Also, imagine after the people really start adopting these laws/ways and start thinking to themselves why is there a plane full of "sinners" sitting on our land???
        Other than that, great deal!!!

        @jesseboy89
I mentioned it as there is a lot of talk about boycotting Brunei due to their throwback policies. Currently they are the stumbling block (these laws) with the Pacific free trade agreement, TTP.
There are actual human beings who are going to go through living and dying hell because of these bastards. You may not wish to give them your money.

exactly, by buying these tickets, you're strengthening the government. Royal Brunei is 100% government owned. every person can make a difference when they see something that is wrong and hurts others.

Hmm interesting… well I'm Jewish (but not gay) so I should be alright, right?? We get along like best mates with the Muslims.

        Sure, of course!.
I recommend wearing your Kippah and carrying a six pack.
Cant see an probs….they will love you. (in Bizarro World)

As opposed to Australians having no choice but supporting the USA and the Motherland paying for atrocities under the banner of "freedom and democracy" all for corporate profit. All we need is a little context to put things in perspective. Out of sight, out of mind…it seems.

Yes our lives our so bad here in Aus. Must be wonderful for those living under an oppressive regime

        • Yes our lives our so bad here in Aus. Must be wonderful for those living under an oppressive regime

How about US foreign policy for a 'regime'? And by extension, ours. We have done more to support dictators and oppressive regimes than anyone and we live in a country benefiting form the resources and cheap goods and mountains of waste that comes from it. How 'bout that for a regime mate? Do you know anything about history or what is going on now?

If the USA/UK (and others) were serious about 'oppressive regimes' most of their history (and present) would be erased because their history is littered with wars of aggression and PROFIT for cheap resources at the expense of lives and supporting the very dictators they must 'erase' and the 'al qaeda' that they created (all CIA assets) and doing deals with Saudis and so forth while lying to us about 9/11 and other events (I'm ready for my 'tinfoil hat' badge now, from Lamestream Media brainwashed subjects). Yeah it's JUST GREAT HERE. Living in a stolen country…living the "good life" while we participate in wars killing innocents and speak of OTHERS as primitive and uncivil when our very histories (and PRESENT) is based on nothing but murder and plunder (conveniently forgotten when we bring up OTHERS…).

          How 'bout THAT REGIME?
My point: we are far from any different as a country and nation and it wouldn't be a bad idea to look in the mirror occasionally before bringing up OTHERS and their OPPRESSIVE REGIMES.

  • If you go to the website mentioned by danj303 (http://www.flyroyalbrunei.com/australia/2014/06/03/rb-winter…) it states "Valid for sale until 30 June 2014.

Wow. The sale ended so soon! :(

    • According to their site, the deal was Posted June 3rd, 2014! And even the web link when you look at it /2014/06/03/rb-winter-escape-specials-from-melbourne/!
Ps. It hasn't expired yet… Still heaps of great prices on many different dates!!!

  • I flew with Brunei earlier this year, same deal .. MEL-BRU-DXB-LON return… it wasn't bad at all for that price.. but BRUNEI airport was terrible. Think it's still under renovations. Not even clean restrooms…
Yes, the dreamliner planes are pretty kool and comfy..

  • Mate stayed there one night recently and it was BORING. No fun in that city at all. From now on he will stick with SG or KL or HK as his stopovers.

    • You edited your comment! Assume you're now just talking about Brunei… Because Dubai is awesome!!!

    • Boring in what way? Aren't all stop over cities the same… as long as they have good Wi-Fi, and room service, I don't care what it's like outside the hotel.

      • +3

I don't care what it's like outside the hotel.

Then you're most likely missing some of the best parts of a trip!!!
I've had some great stop-overs in the past in places like Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Zurich, Adelaide (LoL)….

        • +1

          adelaide lol

        • Stopover in Adelaide? To where?

        • Please note: it takes the humour out of a joke if you have to answer questions about it…
But it was on the way back from Bali about 15 years ago. We got sat in a room for 3 hours with about 50 chairs and 1 vending machine!!!

      • I spent a few days in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, last year. The level of boring-ness really depends on what you want to do during your transit. If you want to sleep and maybe spend a few hours sightseeing, then its perfect and no different from any other city. If your transit style is to party or experience some nightlife (or even see people after dark) then its not ideal.

Just come back from MEL-LHR-MEL on Royal Brunei. Great flights. Lack of alcohol was probably a bonus. Good flight times, aircraft brand new. Food was excellent (recommend the chicken, inc breakfast :) Double stop worked well. Yes, Brunei airport is somewhat 'limited' but otherwise no drawbacks. Highly recommended.

  • The lady on their homepage isn't very Sharia - with her tank top and shorty shorts!

    http://www.flyroyalbrunei.com/australia/files/2014/06/Winter…

  • I recently flew to London via Brunei & Dubai and i must say i was pleasantly surprised. Food and service was great. They fly relatively new Boeing 777 Dreamliners which are very comfortable. Highly recommended!

  • I just had a quick look and for the dates I looked at. There was no stopover in Dubai? Im guessing it.s not for all flights?

    • That's incredibly odd because they don't 'usually' fly direct to London. They must make a fuel stop in between, which is their Dubai holding! What dates were you looking at?
Edit: Even their flight routes show the stop-over!

      • It shows only a stopover only in Brunei to and from London… I was looking at 8-24 of September

        • Cool… Unless you wanted the stopover!!!
Edit: Apparently (I can't find where/when) they are supposed to do a non-stop flight the other way from London to Melbourne???

        • Lol thanks Snoop it was just an observation not a neccessity, but thanks for looking into it :)

        • They always stop at Brunei and then Dubai. Look at flight details for confirmation. Harder to find cheap flights now. JoyV
