I still don't understand how a spreadsheet app can be sold for money when google drive gives it out for free.
A little ironic when the people who are in most need of this are people who need to be careful with money.
And doubly ironic when this is posted on Ozbargains.
You don't understand because you haven't used it. I am a preacher of this app and it's worth every cent.
This app is great to see where your spending money, the Android/iPhone app works seamlessly which makes it 100x easier to put your expenses in.
I'm pretty proficient in Excel and the hassle to up keep the excel spreadsheet and create the graphs when I want to (though pivot tables make it super easy) just isn't worth it. I have my partner using the app as well, so she doesn't need to bother telling me the details of the purchases and she just enters it in herself.
When she wants to spend someone and is not sure of it, flicks the app open, looks at the category eg Make Up and she can see how much money she has to spend for the month.
It also looks pretty! The only thing it is missing is me being able to take photos of my receipts and then pull them out in tax time.
So in short this is nothing like Google Drive!
Yes I agree. Unless you use the app you wouldn't understand. It isn't like a normal budgeting application. When you buy YNAB you're doing more than buying software; you are buying into their methodology. While their method is in my opinion more suited to most people you still need to be dedicated in tracking your spending.

People will make the money back of purchasing this within a month if they follow the methodology. The whole point of the application is to bring people out of debt. They provide all the methods and how to's for free. So technically you can do it on your own if you're inclined to do so. But the software is pretty awesome and simple to use.
100% agree.
It assists with planning, keeping track of funds, monitoring expenditure and ensuring you stay within limits for various areas of spending.
I started using it about six months ago, before that I was breaking even most months. I'm up about $10,000 now.
It is seriously good.
it should come with default budget categories for both 'ozbargains' and 'steam sales'.
maybe 'food' also (optional).
I tried this product and didn't find it "great". Suggest try it before spending the bucks to see if you like it!
I bought it last year in the steam sales and used it for a bit.
The hardest part is making the effort to punch in all the information.
Yeah the concept is good but to actually get all the information put in correctly is the biggest hurdle.
Trying to feed in things like the mortgage repayments, purchases and income doesn't always work first go without a massive amount of playing around. It would work a lot better if you could link it to your bank accounts but it can apparently import your bank statements… if you have American bank accounts.
I have spent a max 1hr on the desktop application. You can set things like income and mortgage repayments to automatically go through.
Bought it in the winter sale and have been using it since. You do have to be diligent in inputting the transactions, but you do get a good picture of your finances if you bother to keep it up.
I also have a mortgage with an offset account and it does a good job of accommodating that so far. Worth every penny IMO.
You can import your statements using Australian bank accounts as well. Pretty much every bank allows you to export to file and import to quicken or OFX which this is compatible for.
At first it's annoying once you set it up and assign everything. However seriously once it is set up it is just beautiful. My partner and I share some accounts and it is just a dream to work out who needs to pay what. It used to take me hours to do the monthly reports and now it takes minutes.
Brilliant app. Works great with Dropbox and the mobile phone app is handy.
We got a little slack and stopped using it. Need to start again. If you keep putting in the information it definitely is a great way to visualise where you are heading.
Handy tip - watch all the tutorials and do the little online courses. Once you understand the concepts it makes a lot more sense. We stuffed up the first time around, then watched the videos and had that ah-hah! moment.
Hi Guys
Current using Microsoft Money but only through a Windows Laptop can you Mac or Iphone.
Can I download my credit card and bank statements in YNAB
Some coments state for US bank accounts only ??
Here is the formats that you need to be able to do so: http://www.youneedabudget.com/support/article/how-to-import-…
Yes you can import your bank data (manually not by auto links), comments stating otherwise are totally wrong.
just bought and download, thank you i've heard great things about this budgeting tool
Strange, shows only 25% off on my STEAM application on the PC. :(
Deal ends at 11am(AEST) today.
I missed it by few minutes =(
They let you use it for free if you're a student: http://www.youneedabudget.com/blog/2014/ynab-is-now-free-for…
Hope the deal gets repeated by the end of the sale. Missed out
Maybe it's off topic, but I'm a happy user of Money Manager EX for many years. It's available in all major OS and Android. Reviewing your budgets, expenses and incomes is very easy through its various forms of reports. You can use it completely free of charge, though I did donate to the developers.
It has a new site recently launched.

I bought this when it was on special a while ago and really didn't see the point of it. I wish I didn't buy into the hype.
Maybe we can help each other out, I think YNAB can be resold though maybe it exposes me to a shared serial? If there is a legit way to buy this from you I'd be interested. Have used earlier version for years and I love it.
Pm me and discuss there.
students get this free FYI!
Even if you missed this deal, if you need a budget, this is the software to get. I've been using it for 6 months and I think it's brilliant.
Pocketbook is free and does the budgeting for me, how is this different though?
I've never used pocketbook. The reason YNAB has such rave reviews eg. http://jamieflarity.com/finance/how-ynab-changed-my-life/ is because they've designed a program around the 4 rules of personal finance. And they teach people how to implement them with free webinars and technical support.
Missed out. Can't access steam website at work. :(
I have this program and it is okay, but a massive hassle for payments. I wish it could automatically figure out regular payments and consistency on its own. It really struggles when you have something like steam sales and have to go in and manually assign it every time to a category.
I would of liked to see a savings prediction as well. Taking into account all previous transactions and income that it could estimate out in 3-6-12 months where you would be at financially.
If anyone snap purchased this and can't fit it in their 'budget' pm me, I'd love to buy it from you (if that's even possible? I think it is)
Have been loyally using v3 for years and love this software. It's currently still on 25% until June 30 so I'll buy that otherwise.
It shows as back to $45 for me, its not 30 June yet?
& it was 10:45am when i checked, not after 11am :(
I purchased two copies during the sale, before realising that we only needed to buy one for the household. So I've got a spare gift copy if someone wants to buy it off me. PM me.
It's gone now.
Yoink! (blame me)
Thanks sys2061 :)
I don't see the need myself to budget, I just buy what I need and that is about it. If I am hungry I will will buy something to eat, if I am thirsty I will buy a coke or something. Worrying about budgeting for these little things is stupid. Planning to only spend $200 for groceries and then giving yourself $50 for entertainment….. Also if there is something you want or need and you have gone over your allotment for that sector, you are just going to buy it anyway. Most people do not follow their budget anyway. Also you don't need to use a budget to "find out where your money is going", I think everyone knows where their money is going.
Don't waste your time with a budget, just try to buy cheaply what you need and save the rest in some kind of savings plan.
I used to live like that too, and you're mostly right - if you are disciplined then it can work. I have used YNAB for a few years now, I don't use it exactly as it was intended, in that I don't 'allocate' monthly budgets to spend, all I use it for is tracking everything I have previously spent. This is also unlikely to work if you can't manage money in the first place.
I have periodic income so monthly budgets just won't work for me, I have lean and rich months. So I used mine looking backward.
If I ever have a fixed weekly/monthly income maybe I would try using it as a forward budget but my way works and it's nice to see where the money has gone as time goes by. Just how much are we using on fuel over the year, car services, gas/electricity… it's all put into perspective in nice pretty graphs. I like that, others may not care for it.
Any leftover monies goes into my mortgage, same principle you mentioned.
My 2c
Anyone got any extra copies kicking around that they don't want? I'll gladly exchange some funds.
Great product,
I just wish it would sync to my bank accounts like pocketbook does
