ebay buyer wants refund for not reading the description

I need an advice how to handle this situation.
I usually sell items that I dont want/need in ebay or gumtree. I had couple of US itunes cards that I am not going to use.
so I listed them in ebay with clearly saying they are only for US account and will not refund if the code has been emailed.

this morning someone bought one. I waited ~20 min to give him some time if he changed his mind, so he can email me before I send the code. no email received so I sent him the code. in the noon time I got an email saing the code its not working and he is not sure if he is doing it right or the code not correct.

I checked the code and everything correct and told him his account must be US and wont work with AU account. now he emailing me saying wants refund and doesn't want to create a US account.
is he allowed to do that? its clearly his mistake? what paypal will say if he opened dispute? also can he leave negative feedback?

Becareful because the excuse he may use with paypal is that he never got a code. Given paypal's history, the customer is always right. You will likely end up issuing refund of he pulls a stunt like that

    • but I sent the code using ebay massaging and he confirmed he got the code and want me to check it if its correct or no. I can take screenshots for his messages and upload them on the dispute.
plus the last messages he said that doesn't want to create US account. So he received the code and tested and didn't work with his account.
if they do that its unfair for the seller. any buyer can scam the seller.

      • I don't think PayPal seller protection covers you for emailed codes

        • Shouldn't cover the buyer either….. Digital codes are not covered by Paypal's terms.

I'd hope that the email chain OP has would be proof that goods were delivered as promised, but yeah Paypal sides with customers most of the time.

Still, even if you gave a refund, how could you guarantee the buyer won't create an account and try to redeem the code afterwards?

If he has emailed to say the code doesn't work then obviously there's a record of him acknowledging he has received it…tell him to fly a kite!

If you clearly showed it was for US purchase then its his problem.
He has admitted to receiving the code so he cant pull that one.
I would mention it to ebay and see what they say. If you are first on the mat then it may give you some credibility.

It was clearly shown in BOTH the title and description that it was US?

I think digitally delivered goods do not qualify for paypal protection.
If you want to play nice then I guess you could redeem the code in your account and if successful give him a refund.

  • Yes your buyer is an idiot, unfortunately PayPal will likely give him a refund if he raises a dispute.

why? it is a virtual goods. paypal doesn't cover the buyer under those circumstances

Try to argue back with Paypal. Say that it is not practical selling this product now that the buyer knows the code since he/she could easily sell it themselves if they win the dispute.
