Thinking of changing to Vaya Mobile, but I'm sceptical...

So for the past 12 months I've been with TPG on their $20 plan which originally had $550 of calls and 1.5gb of data but this month they've cut down to 1gb of data which I've already burned through. I'm thinking of changing to the Vaya Power Plan 29 but I'm a little worried about a few things…

Will they cut down their generous 2.5gb of data as soon as I join?

Will mobile coverage differ at all from TPG?

Has anyone had any experience with Vaya? and if so how do they compare to other telcos?

I'm on budget here and don't want to pay the fees associated with changing carriers if I'm just gonna get ripped off as soon as I join.

Thanks in advance.

TPG & Vaya both use Optus network, so no change in coverage
No probs with Vaya in the past 2 years since been with them.
    Some (unofficial) FAQs here: https://vayafaq.jottit.com/
Can't crystal ball their future sorry.

    • Thanks, has there been no change to your plan in that time?

      • no changes, although i did bump up from a $11 to $17 plan (or thereabouts) without problem.

  • vaya is the best provided you don't experience any setup, porting or establishment issues (thankfully for me).

my only gripe is that the voicemail feature doesn't work like the other networks on iphone where you can choose and delete off the menu. you have to dial in like the old school nokia times.

data is quite good… i used to be on optus and couldn't fault the coverage after switching but at the same time don't be expecting telstra for that what your paying

    • The feature you're referring to is called 'visual voicemail'.

I believe vaya has a policy where they don't change your plan within 2yrs of your account activation. Plus, they have already made plan changes early this year, along with live connected. So I doubt they will suddenly cut your plan down.

Go with Telechoice Kogan deal, 10kb data sessions, unlimited free SMS and Telstra line. It's only 3G but seriously, you won't notice and you save phone battery.

    • I agree on the battery part. Ever since joining Vaya and being on 4G. My battery life has taken a plummet.

Been with them for 9 months.

    No problems at all.

Be mindful when paying your bill, don't enter an incorrect credit card otherwise you will be hit with a $10 dishonour fee.

Their data charges are by the MB not KB, something to keep a note of if you find your data chipping away faster than normal.

Otherwise, they have been great. 4G is fast, coverage is good thus far.

I had called them up twice. First time 30 minute wait, the other 5 minutes. Better than my experience with Westpac being roughly 15-20 minutes a pop or Citibank sometimes 2 hours, useless.

Make the change, it's worth it!

  • I've been pretty happy with them. I jumped on the $11 plan before it got grandfathered.
The only issue I've had with them is with billing, where they didn't give me my first month credit (promotion they had). Their customer service is pretty much the same as everyone else (read: not great)

Other than that, no problems with their service for nearly 2 years now :)

  • Vaya is VERY painful if traveling overseas though (and wanting to use the Vaya sim).

    • I haven't tried that yet but I think you are referring to the huge deposit you have to pay. Something crazy like $500??

Other than that I personally love Vaya. Had no issues at all with them and been with them for about 6 months. I came from TPG and they were terrible from the customer service to value for money….

You can also refer friends and get a free month credit - BONUS :)

  • Thanks for the info guys, I called Vaya today and they guaranteed me that the plan would hold for at least 24 months, it looks like I am pretty safe.
