Newly introduced and custom made to fit flush in the SD slot in a MacBook Air for long-term use. This would be ideal for anyone who jumped on the recent deals at Myer and Dick Smith (like me) who feel nervous about the small HD on the MacBook Air and are looking for system-integrated memory solutions. RRP is $120.

Apple wants $200 for a 256GB drive upgrade. This achieves the same result for less than half the price. It's flush with the side of the laptop so you can leave it in. Some people use it as a time capsule drive, others for photos, music and files.

Nah. This is just a SD card cut in half. Internal SSD is much faster.
Still good as an additional storage.

      • Yes, but most of the stuff that fills up drives are files that don't need to be moved quickly much anyhow.

  • this is an awesome idea, might even get one for my MBP.. however I'm guessing transfer speeds wouldn't be that great.

    • Amazon says "Max Read: 95MB/s, Max Write: 60MB/s"
Which is not too bad for 128Gb SD card.

      • +1

read some of the reviews, some people getting as low as 8mb/s

        • +1

Interesting. The older MBA's have the USB2.0 interface which the SD SLot connects to and its limited in speed by it. only the later models of 2013 onwards will have faster speeds as a result of the faster 3.0 interface.

People getting 8MB/Sec were testing using small files - which are slow no matter what storage you are copying to since there are thousands of these files that require open/write/close operations etc. As opposed to one big file that only requires once, stream data to it and then close.

Better pay more and get the 256GB SSD Macbook Air.

    • +2

I think an Ozbargainer would have a fit forking over $200 for 128gb of storage.

  • For copying files faster and efficiently I used to use Teracopy on Windows, apparently Ultracopier is the alternative for Mac, if anyone is interested or finding it hard to move files around from HD's.

I have not tried it yet thou

  • Debated getting one of these, or the Nifty Drive on the weekend. Decided that for me I'm better off with a 1-3TB USB3 drive for roughly the same price when I need a storage boost (when editing GoPro videos).

    • +1

I have one also but I thought this is useful for not having to take an extra accessory with me everywhere.

      • I understand. In my case the USB drive just goes in my bag with other GoPro nicknacks, and only makes an appearance when video editing.

"Please Mention that not all MacBook slots are the same depth. I have a new Late 2013 rMBP and the PNY card sticks out 1/4 of an inch further than it did on an older rMBP. It is painful to catch your hand on."
so with this deal, depending on your model it may or may not be flushed with the macbook body

      • Actually they make different models and shapes for different MacBook models. The JetDrive 130 is for the Macbook Air and IS flush. They make others tailored for the other Macs. Check the Transcend website for details.

  • Anyone know if this is short enough to fit in a Raspberry Pi with the official case? I'm wanting to upgrade my card and would love one which doesn't protrude nearly as much.

    • +1

Can you get a 128gb micro sd card for less than $85? I'd just get a $1.35 'raspberry pi sd card adapter' (that's the search term I used on eBay), then you have a choice of a capacity/speed.

  • Anyone know the difference between 130, 360 etc (the various model numbers)?

    • +1

Yes! The shape. They are custom designed for different models. The 130 is for the Mac Air. Look closely before you buy. I actually initially bought the wrong one but cancelled within an hour and reordered the right one. The price appears to be the same for the same capacity regardless of shape.

  • What about a USB key like this?

    http://www.amazon.com/PNY-Turbo-Performance-Drive-P-FD128TBO…

Twice the speed and about half the price of one of these.

    • Yes, a good option, except you have to go through the motion of plugging it in and out all the time if you pack up your laptop. The convenience of this memory card is to leave it in the computer semi-permanently.

this does not strike me as all that inconvenient, and surely worth it for the gain in speed and the decrease in price.

Each of these storage solutions have a plus side and a minus side.

      Flush SD:
Pro: Plug in and leave in. Can be treated as an integral part of the system file management, and indeed, an integral part of the laptop. Can be set to automatically back up the MacBook Air's internal HD through Time Machine to spill-proof your data.
Con: Slower and more expensive per GB than other storage options.

      USB3 Key:
Pro: Faster and cheaper per GB than Flush SD. Can fit on a keyring.
Con: Must remove when transporting. If you lose your keys, you lose your data. More expensive per GB than portable HD.

      Portable HD
Pro: Faster and cheaper per GB than Flush SD or USB3 Key
Con: Bulkier than the other two options. Can't fit on a keyring. If you lose your drive, you lose your data.

I have the 330 version for the 13" rMBP getting this.
    http://s181.photobucket.com/user/kjoy064/media/DiskSpeedTest…

    • 46.9 MB/s write, 88.1 MB/s read. That's pretty decent speed, all things considered. How much did you pay?

      • $50.97USD

        • including freight

        • 64GB right?

        • oh yes sorry!
