Car for my mum around $12000, Perth

Hey All,

Wondering if theres any good deals on cars for around this price or if I should go for second hand?

Looking for reliability as she is a travelling nurse, she also requires a bit of boot space for this..

At the moment we're looking at used mazda 3s with less than 80kkms, but we aren't really sure where to look for the best quality car for price.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to look for a bargain in Perth?

  • 2012+ Yaris. 1.5L, decent boot space in the hatch if you fold down seats.

    • Haha that was one of the options I had but she didn't really like the look of the yaris and other really cheap hatchbacks that go for that price new usually, thats mostly why i looked at second hand

    • Toyota's are a good buy (Corolla's are very good but a bit higher premium). I've got a Mazda 323 I bought at the Pickles Auctions in Queensland a few years ago. At that stage, they were a dime a dozen so I got it cheap and it was in excellent mechanical condition. I've spent maybe $3k on it in 6 years including servicing and tyres and a new clutch. Pretty good value tbh.

Not sure whether there's any government auctions that you could check out, but you could find a mechanic or your state automotive club to come and inspect any before bidding. Costs a few bucks, but cheaper than buying a lemon.

    • My interest in a secondhand Yaris evaporated the second I saw it had one of those centred dashes. Just too weird.

I thought the title said cat. Car makes much more sense.

  • You really can't be picky at that price. I guess you could pick up a Fiat 500 if she can drive a manual, with low kms.

Honda Civic. I have mine (auto) still on 76000kms and would gladly sell it for $12000. And there's many around selling around those mark as well. Look for 2006-2007 model. Reliable car, plenty of booth space.

  • A suzuki alto is about that and 3 or 5 year warranty. Much better than buying a secondhand 10 year old car with 80ks on the clock. Cheapest car to run as well

Commodore. Reliable, huge bootspace and if something does go wrong, they are cheap to fix.

A first gen i30 wagon, they're bigger than a hatch but not too big. Boot space wise they're far more practical than a sedan or hatch. Ford mondao wagon or hatch both have huge boots. Mitsubishi lancer hatch has a decent amount of room if you fold the seats down.
A VZ Commodore wagon is possible, the VE Commodore might be out of your km\price range.

If you're keen on Mazdas then possibly a Mazada 6 hatch if your budget can stretch alittle.

I recently had to purchase a vechile for 12 grand it's a really tough market to balance needs, price and kms. Good luck.

  • Hi there , I know of a good little car for sale here in Perth. It is a Astra & has only 76,000 Klm on the clock. Not too sure of the year though, but I have seen it around, as I live in a village and most of the cars here are garaged a lot as they are owned by older/ mature people. The car looks in good cond . Worth a look I think

  • Ford Fiesta, either a low km 2004-2006 shape or the current shape are excellent cars. There's a 49000km ZETEC model here for $11500. There's heaps of lower spec models for under 10K.
If you're lucky you could find a diesel in your price range.

Fold the rear seats and you have plenty of cargo room.

Gumtree is the place. John Hughes is not. You have been warned.

  • Hi, further to my earlier post,I forgot to mention the year & price of the Astra. It is priced @ $6,500 and yr is 05
    Cheers,Agnes
