ASUS EEE PC - difference

Hey guys, i'm not very technologically inclined so was hoping someone could help me here.

There is a EEE PC 1000E selling for around $650-$750 on cotd or other online retailers at times.
There is also the other version which cotd has for around $240 at times.

I know there are differences such as screen (7" vs 10"), more memory and better performance generally I am sure with the 1000E.

I know a lot of people here have bought the $240 one from cotd - can you please tell me your experience. Is it a good system? What is linux like?
Is it worth getting next time they have it on cotd.

  • It all boils down to what you need it for.

Comparing $650 1000E with $240 701 is like comparing a Mini with Daewoo Matiz. Yeah I know both of them are small, but there are a lot of differences between the two.

    • or like a Barina with a Cruze

Also try out the models in store. It'll give you an idea if you can use it.

Try typing a whole lot of stuff into the netboooks too, to give you a feel if the keyboard layout is acceptable. Especially whether the backspace key is in a useable spot.

I also found, that way, that the trackpad seemed to be a problem on one netbook. I'd type away, my palm would brush the trackpad, which was then interpretted as move mouse and click. That was a problem as it kept taking the focus away from what I was working on, if I pressed the space bar (I tend to press down with heel of my right hand when I do that)

  • I have one of the 701's (CoTD special) which I quite like. It's on Linux which I had never used before. Problem for me is I have a Telstra pre-paid broadband thingie which will not operate on Linux :(

Now seeing as the whole point of my getting the little 701 was for me to connect to the internet whilst we are traveling interstate, which we do at least once a fortnight for our business, I'm afraid the Linux version is useless to me. I need Telstra BB as the cheaper services just do not have the country coverage. So, I either need to switch the OS to xp which is way beyond my tech capabilities from what I have seen or buy another netbook with xp on it. Other than that, it was perfect for me.

    • you could just install "xp-lite"

  • oh Davo, I love how you say "just" install xp-lite :( I would love to do that, I have read up on it and tried to breathe deep and take the chance… but no, I'm afraid I am not just not that game. I "just" don't understand the jargon. But, I thank you for mentioning it. :)

oh meagan! just grab a techno wizz cousin/son/brother etc. get them to "download" a version of xp-lite off the interwebs. then follow these instructions :D http://myeeeguides.wordpress.com/2008/11/15/winsetupfromusb-…

If you're not too big on technology (like i was), just have to follow the instructions really carefully. It will work! I can also help you over the email if you need it. But yeah, you should think about it!

  • Thank you Davo for your offer of help, it is really appreciated :) Your suggestion of grabbing a techno wizz reminded me that my daughter's boyfriend is a total geek, along with all his friends! I didn't even think! I've put the request for help out now, all thanks to you my friend :)

    • So Davo1111 has his uses LOL

Guess forum contributions (like yours) does have paybacks

      • lol, i hope the occasional whinge by me helps someone :P lol
